Graduate Spin Angular Momentum Conservation in the Stern-Gerlach Experiment
Thanks for the replies. Sorry it took me so long to get back to this topic. To Jacques, I'm not a physics major so I don't know what the last 2/3 of what you said means, sorry! To jtbell, yes, those notations would make a lot more sense. To Bill_K, it's not so much that I didn't expect \mu...- FirstYearGrad

Graduate Spin Angular Momentum Conservation in the Stern-Gerlach Experiment
I really did use the search function to try and figure this out for myself before posting , but this has been bugging me for approximately two days. I've been trying to understand the Stern-Gerlach experiment, primarily from hyperphysics (...- FirstYearGrad

An EE want to specialize in E&M field theory
E&M stops at Maxwell's equations in EE. It is primarily used as a tool in creating high frequency circuits as well as antennas. You will find that E&M is already well-understood at the quantum level thanks to Feynman, Dirac, and others. If you want to do something new, I strongly suggest...- FirstYearGrad

How to function with sleep deprivation
I've noticed I require less sleep as I work out more. However, you wouldn't be gaining any more study time because you'd be working out instead :).- FirstYearGrad

Schools Best graduate school for Spintronics and Spin Tnasport Research?
Not terribly familiar with the field, but is this even a serious research area anymore? It was my impression that nobody has ever even made a good spinFET or, at the very least, they are so hard to make that the majority of papers are theoretical.- FirstYearGrad

Biomedical Engineering: Scope, Options & Benefits
I don't think the demand is there for BME relative to the output of BME's. I have this conspiracy theory that the only reason it gets so much attention is that women flock to it unlike other engineering disciplines.- FirstYearGrad

Should I get a Master's in biomedical engineering?
A lot of the professors I know working in the area you talk of in paragraph 1 are not from BME but rather have an electrical engineering background. The electrical engineering part is a lot harder than learning the bio part. Also, I'm not really seeing how potentially showing dolphins being...- FirstYearGrad

Should I Choose Nanotechnology or Physics?
Nanotechnology is not a subfield of engineering. Many different roads -- including physics -- will lead you there.- FirstYearGrad

Fixing Overfull hboxes in Document Writing
Hello, This isn't a homework question, but I could not find a better place to put it. I'm writing a document (my resume, actually). I was trying to have in one spot an area left justified that says "2006-2007" that is contained in an invisible box exactly 1 inch wide then have a text box...- FirstYearGrad

Whatever you think american universities are, they're probably not. I think maybe many Europeans have this misconception.- FirstYearGrad

Will I Struggle More in Grad School Compared to Undergrad?
That's a pretty poor attitude. A big part of conferences is actually meeting peers in your academic community as well as seeing what's current beyond merely reading papers. I always come back with boatloads of ideas after going to, say, APS March Meeting. It's also about getting your ideas...- FirstYearGrad

Programs How many papers should I publish during PhD to get a decent postdoc position?
As has been said, it's highly dependent upon the philosophy of the advisor and department. Some are very careful. I actually know one Ph.D student who had his first first author paper published in Nature like 3 or 4 years in. Obviously that is going to be worth a lot more than 5 papers...- FirstYearGrad

Do you think this is true for Engineers vs Phyiscists?
Professor salaries at my school are about 50% higher for engineering prof's than physics. However, the engineering program is in the top 10 while the physics program probably doesn't crack the top 25- FirstYearGrad
