Graduate Topological Insulators and Inversion Symmetry
Thanks, I found that paper and it clarifies some questions. Originally, I wasn't sure if it was required or just convenient, but now I know. Thanks!- Goalie33

Graduate Topological Insulators and Inversion Symmetry
Hi, I was curious if specific symmetries (or lack thereof) in crystal structure are necessary for the formation of topological insulators. Specifically, do we require that inversion symmetry (or inversion asymmetry) be present in the lattice in order to form the TI state? Thanks, Goalie33- Goalie33

Laptop for Grad School: Find the Best Under $1000
Hi Guys (and Gals), I hope no one minds that I posted this in "Academic Guidance", but I figured this is something you all have dealt with... I'm starting graduate school in the fall and I'm looking to buy a new laptop. I will be traveling on the train/bus with it daily so I want something on...- Goalie33

Undergrad D spacing from X-ray diffraction data
Hi, I think you're making this out to be a more complicated operation than it needs to be. I would suggest getting a good book on XRD from the library (I like Cullity). It will nearly walk you through the steps to find a, b, and c. Now, the book will give you a formula for bragg angle (NOT...- Goalie33

Undergrad D spacing from X-ray diffraction data
Plot this and find out what 2theta value your peaks occur at. If you know the crystal structure and the family of planes you wish to find the d-spacing for it is just a simple calculation. If you don't know the crystal structure, its more complicated.- Goalie33

Should I Retake the GRE for Engineering Grad School Applications?
Thanks, I think I will retake it. I really just need to budget my time- I got 660 and I didn't even finish about 20% of the test (the tough thing is I spent my time checking and rechecking my answers- I just need to trust myself a little more). Thankfully, I didn't send my scores anywhere once I...- Goalie33

Should I Retake the GRE for Engineering Grad School Applications?
Hi, I am beginning to get ready to apply to graduate schools and I had a question. I just took the general GRE and scored 660 Quant, and 530 Verbal. Now, I have been told that engineering programs (I'm applying to Mat Sci) expect near perfect Quant scores. So should I retake it? A little...- Goalie33

Programs Is it Possible to Triple Major and Have 2 Minors in College?
Hi, I am currently about to finish college with two majors and a minor (Physics, Mat. Sci. and Math; respectively) and it took 5 very hectic years. I can't imagine doing 3 majors in less than 6 years, especially if you want to do research (summer research means no summer classes, if you do it...- Goalie33

Graduate Do Electron Holes Have Spin Angular Momentum?
Yes, but they can be modeled as particles with a charge and an effective mass, so after that my next thought was spin. Can anyone else weigh in on the matter?- Goalie33

Graduate Do Electron Holes Have Spin Angular Momentum?
Do holes (i.e. electron holes) have spin angular momentum like electrons do? Thanks for any insight you can give and if you can recommend any literature on the mater that would be great! Thanks!- Goalie33
