Understanding Matrix Transformations: Solving a Common Homework Problem

Homework Statement Homework Equations NoneThe Attempt at a Solution Well guys, this is a problem I've been having for the last 2 days and with my midterm tomorrow I have no time to fiddle around with it. So, I do not understand how (where it says b) how Im going to use a division symbol ( /...

    Solving Matrix Vector Equation

So they are linearly independent if a = b = c = 0? I thought it was not suppose to equal zero like the determinant or whatever it is called det A. When A doesn't equal 0, it is not or is it linearly independent? Or does this have nothing to do with this?

    Solving Matrix Vector Equation

    Homework Statement Homework Equations None The Attempt at a Solution Well I am pretty sure you just put it into a matrix and solve in row echelon form. So I tried it. 1 -1 -1 0 2 1 7 0 1 2 9 0 r2 = r2 - 2r1 r3 = r3 - r1 1 -1 -1 0 0 3 9 0 0 3 10 0 r3 = r3 - r2 1...

    Gaussian Elimination Solve for variable

Oh, so (k+32) must equal 0 to make the solution impossible. Which means k = -32?

Solve for variable in augmented matrix

Sorry I was just brain dead yesterday. You just divide r2 by -4 and then it gives you h. Thanks for your help guys.

Solve for variable in augmented matrix

Oh! m = -20? Would this be the same idea? Determine the value of h such that the matrix is the augmented matrix of a consistent linear system. 5 -3 h -20 15 5 I can't solve for it, you can never make the first to variables in the matrix equal You can get: r2/-5 5 -3 h 4 -3 1...

Solve for variable in augmented matrix

My bad, i didn't mean r2/r1...it was r2-r1 and r3-r1 Anyways, back to my question: You make one row equal to the one with the variable to solve for it? Or is there some other way

Solve for variable in augmented matrix

So wait, you make one row equal to the one with the variable to solve for it? also, dividing is not one of the row operations but i believe multiplying is. where you can multiply 1/-4 which is the same as dividing

Concentation of Citric Acid in Fruit Juice

What? Now I'm confused again, how does that work? Please tell me asap, I don't have long until I have to have this lab complete. Why would it be NaCl? That doesn't make sense with anything. Cl wasn't even part of the experiment. It can't be created through thin air. C3H5O(COOH)3(aq) + 3...

Concentation of Citric Acid in Fruit Juice

I think I understand it more now! Let me see, C3H5O(COOH)3(aq) + 3 NaOH(aq) ==> C3H5O(COO)3(aq) + 3 H2O(l) + 3 Na(s) But there wasn't any solid from the reaction so I'm not sure where the Na(s) goes, does it just separate or get added onto one for the formula's?
