Other Should I Become a Mathematician?
mathwonk, I was just wondering your opinion (should one exist) on Calculus by Hughes-Hallett et al (required text for my university). It seems to have poor ratings, though quite a few do. Should I get another book to learn from and just use this for problem sets? I find it strange that they...- Helical

Why do it if someone else does it better?
Howers, for someone with so little confidence in his own abilities you sure seem to think you're right about everything. To say that someone with an I.Q. of 115 is mentally handicapped is a joke. My younger brother is seven years old and can't speak a sentence or feed himself, he's mentally...- Helical

Undergrad Spivak as first exposure to Calculus?
lurflurf, thanks for the response. As for your question about proving things, the only thing we have really covered as far as proofs go are trigonometric identities. An example of what we did was as follows: cos2\theta = cos^{2}\theta - sin^{2}\theta tan(S-T) = \frac{tan(S) -... -

Undergrad Spivak as first exposure to Calculus?
Next year I'm going to begin studying physics as freshman and this summer I was thinking about studying Calculus on my own. Would Spivak be feasible as an introduction to calculus? I'm in Pre-Calculus right now and find it pretty easy (though I know that is not necessarily any indicator of... -

Top textbook sticky thread?
Here is my list so far, there are a few that I'm not sure if they are actually undergrad text's. Shankar and Sakurai in particular seem to be used as graduate textbooks but they also seem to be undergraduate? I'm not sure. I'm sure this list isn't as good or complete as it could be, I tried...- Helical

Top textbook sticky thread?
So is there any particular reason why this hasn't happened? I know I posted this thread a while ago but I still would like to see this, there are threads (which have been linked to here) but they are lacking in that they are unorganized and lack descriptions of textbooks. I'm assuming the...- Helical

Programs Can a 2.2 Degree from Cambridge Secure a PhD Position in Physics?
Nobody seems to have suggested this yet, but I was just thinking, you might apply for grad school in the U.S.? A name like Cambridge has quite a bit of prestige and, judging from the posts of others, it appears you were at least a decent student there (I'm unfamiliar with the education system).- Helical

Introducing the PF Library
It might just be me, I'm kind of a neat freak, but I think that the article writers should be able to turn off information sections (i.e. Definition/Summary, Equations, Scientists, etc.) which don't apply so there aren't empty sections. Some things just aren't going to be "In the News."- Helical

Schools I am leaving high school early and starting to look at colleges
If I were you I would look at Reed College in Portland Oregon, it is a small liberal arts school but they have a good physics program (the well known textbook writer David Griffiths teaches there). They also have mandatory humanities requirements of all undergraduates so that should make your...- Helical

Struggling Senior: Should I Take the Risk?
Well I'm accepted I'm just afraid that if I accept my admission to UW then I will get denied (and am wondering if this happens often?). But yeah CC would be an option then. However I'm pretty certain I want to go to WWU over CC anyways. I like WWU a lot as well though so that's why (I just don't...- Helical

Struggling Senior: Should I Take the Risk?
Basically I just want to know if the scenario I outlined (i.e. not being able to go to any college at all) could actually to happen to someone. And maybe if that should be a concern in I should take into consideration in my decision. That may not have been clear.- Helical

Struggling Senior: Should I Take the Risk?
Hi, I'm in kind of a weird situation. I am senior in high school and my grades are pretty poor right now, my last quarter is just beginning but grades go on transcripts on a semester basis. This is mostly because I hate to do assignments like make board games and posters etc. so I don't. There...- Helical

High School Is the Prime Spiral an Intriguing Study or Just a Quirk?
I've was reading about it [http://mathworld.wolfram.com/PrimeSpiral.htm] and found it intriguing, has there been a great deal of study devoted to it or is it thought of as some kind of quark? [P.S. I don't really know much about number theory, just curious]- Helical

The biggest obstacle of science is knowing before we know
WW_III_ANGRY, You seem to have missed Hurkyl's point, I believe you misunderstand the technical term expansion. I think it is different than everyday use (I do not understand it either and have pondered the same thing you are). It seems the spatial dimensions themselves are actually what are...- Helical
