Tesla Powerwall: Engineering Analysis
The cars look good and perform well, the batteries are interesting, but are we really taking the numbers seriously from a company that has never made a dime in profit? Or did that change?- Highspeed

Why Does AC Delay After Adjusting the Thermostat?
The coldest portions of the a/c system are the evaporator and the suction line. It is possible for the refrigerant to condense in these areas at shut-down, especially near the TXV or orifice tube (that area is partially liquid already). A quick restart could cause liquid to be pulled into the...- Highspeed

Simple Mechanics Project: How to Secure a Gear Shaft for Load-Bearing Use
Can you provide more information on the method used to hold the shaft vertical? Is the gear at the top of the shaft? You'll likely need a key, but depending on the situation, collars could be used on both sides of the gear, the gear could be pinned, the gear could be pressed on, the gear could...- Highspeed

Can exhaust heat be used to reduce automotive drag?
 Setting aside the theoretical exercise for a moment...unless there is some amazing heat exchanger in play here, the vehicle is being wrapped in exhaust gases. At what point would someone like to consider how the engine continues to run without fresh air being available? Or the driver...- Highspeed

How to configure a T connection for graywater collection
Any valve in the drain line runs a risk of sending contaminated water to your rain water tank. I'm assuming that the water is pressurized on delivery; so, why not put a solenoid (or even a manual valve) on the hot feed line and divert the water back to the rain tank? You could use a timer, or...- Highspeed

What are the design considerations for a heat exchanger for an MX5 sports car?
No disrepect intended at all...but have you looked at a modern vehicle radiator? I would suggest that you ask yourself what does the most heat transfer - the tubes, the fins, or the tanks? If you haven't already, take a good look at the fins from a radiator. Hint: How many sets of fins are...- Highspeed

What Temperature is Cold for You? 76°F, 69°F, 90°F or More?
;) Being from a state that is shaped like a mitten may skew my view a bit. Cold, disregarding wind-chill, doesn't really happen until about 40F. Over that a vest is all you need to work outside. Inside, cold for me is below about 68F, as everything in the house gets cool to the touch and...- Highspeed

I don't understand the problem of the valve face is too wide
If the seat is too narrow, it not only affects flow and performance, but it can also lead to overheating of the valve. If it's too wide, flow is also affected, but it also spreads the spring pressure across too much area which can affect sealing and seating. Ditto to Simon.- Highspeed

Dual spark plugs, firing between them?
Scooterguy, You are correct in your theory of a larger spark igniting more of the mixture, thus increasing the efficiency of the engine. The problem is, as stated previously, that it's very difficult to control where the spark will go with large gaps. The spark will choose the most efficient...- Highspeed

Question about automotive braking systems
Bubble (inverted) flares are OEM on many vehicles these days. Apparently there is no such rule from the DOT.- Highspeed

Question about hydraulics and mechanics
It's not just the problem of moving it quickly, it's stopping it quickly also. A hydraulic excavator for example simply stops the hydraulic flow, and the momentum of the arm and load is absorbed into the equipment. Move it faster and there is more load to absorb...with extreme results...- Highspeed

What are acceptable compression test readings for a 4 cylinder engine?
Zooby, It sounds like your truck is running rich or has a misfire. You could also have dirty oil or a plugged air filter. If it's FI then even a slow or dead O2 sensor, or some other cause of a lean o2 reading. There are some other possibities too, but hard to guess without more info. A...- Highspeed
