Complex numbers: Understanding solutions to tough problems
Ah! That makes so much more sense now. Looking at the problem with z=a+bi made much more sense. What happened when you went from 1+z^{2} to |1+z^{2}|^{2}? How did a^{2}-b^{2}+1+2abi become (1+a^{2}-b^{2})^{2}+4a^{2}b^{3}? What about the last part when the function showed up?- Hioj

Prove every rational number has a never ending decimal view
From wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rational_number): "The decimal expansion of a rational number always either terminates after finitely many digits or begins to repeat the same finite sequence of digits over and over. Moreover, any repeating or terminating decimal represents a rational...- Hioj

Complex numbers: Understanding solutions to tough problems
Following are problems from the book "Complex Numbers from A to ...Z" by Titu Andreescu and Dorin Andrica. It's a wonderful book, I'm still adapting to the higher-than-usual level though. My questions/comments are written in bold throughout the problems and solutions. Problem 1: Prove that for...- Hioj

Mechanics - two boxes down a hill
The following assumes g=10\dfrac{m}{s} for simplicity. We have \dfrac{1}{2}mv^{2}=mgh and so h=\dfrac{v^{2}}{2g}=\dfrac{1}{20} as v^{2}=1\dfrac{m}{s} for the first box. For the second box, it must be true that the kinetic energy with the end speed v equals the kinetic energy it starts off...- Hioj

Mechanics - two boxes down a hill
Homework Statement The first box slides down a hill and gains speed and ends at v=1 \dfrac{m}{s}. The second box has an initial speed of v_{0}=1 \dfrac{m}{s} and slides down the same hill. What speed does it end up with? The boxes have equal masses. Solve this without first solving...- Hioj

Vector Calculus & Diff Equations book?
Supposedly, https://www.amazon.com/dp/0393925161/?tag=pfamazon01-20 should be pretty good. I'm starting it soon. For differential equations, https://www.amazon.com/dp/0486649407/?tag=pfamazon01-20 should be one of the best. It's all math, though, but seems to include lots of examples from...- Hioj

What Are the Best Textbooks for Challenging Physics Problems?
Hello everyone I've recently begun studying "Introduction to Classical Mechanics" by David Morin, and the problems are AMAZING. Do you know of any other textbooks/collections of problems where problems like these can be found? (With solutions) This applies to any undergraduate physics...- Hioj

Should I Switch from Physics to Economics for Financial Stability?
Why limit yourself to just one of them? Take 1 then take the other afterwards. Why do you say that there are no money in physics? It all depends on what you do with your abilities and your creativity.- Hioj

Undergraduate physics competitions
This is the only one that I know of: https://ortvay.secureweb.elte.hu/" . Some big company should do something about that though, and start arranging some undergraduate competitions. It's not like they can't make hard enough undergrad problems, just like the IPhO has tough questions for high...- Hioj

Physics Textbooks for Self-Study: Mechanics, Electrodynamics & More
I've recently taken a liking to physics and math, and I want to start reading some texts about the various physics topics. There are many books out there to choose from, I'll list the books next to the topic as I go along. Mechanics 1. "Introduction to Classical Mechanics: With Problems and...- Hioj

Schools Choosing the appropriate college
(Sorry for the two threads in 1 day, this is something that I feel requires attention though so I have created 2 threads, since it's 2 different topics) I believe I have the qualifications to apply to well-regarded universities such as Harvard, MIT, CalTech, Oxford etc. I know their...- Hioj

Winning physics/math competitions
I recently found out that I really love physics and math. But in order to propel myself forward most efficiently, I need to have a goal in mind, and that goal has to be worthwhile. It's too late for me to participate in the IPhO/IMO, unfortunately. Which goals would you recommend I set for...- Hioj

Undergrad Particle collisions at the LHC
Hello everyone, Quick question: Which particles are colliding at the LHC and why? All I know is that proton-proton collisions are explored as well as heavier nuclei such as gold (Au) and lead (Pb) to research the quark-gluon plasma state. -Hioj- Hioj
