How did Victorians estimate the ages of fossils?

Wood found in bogs can be used to develop a ring database. At one point some place in Europe had the most complete ring database going back 10,000 years. I'm sure that has changed.

How did Victorians estimate the ages of fossils?

If you read the book the Time Machine you'll see that the time traveler goes to a point some 30+ million years into the future to see the end of the world. The book was published the year before Becquerel discovered radioactivity. My guess is that Wells used the best estimate of the life time of...

News Police dept, Sherrif dept, US Marshal

The sheriff and police designations are state dependent. In a few states the sheriff does little while in some states such as where I live the sheriff enforces the law in counties.

Learn Programming - No Prior Experience Needed

I disagree here. Fortran is used because it can be better optimized than other languages such as C. Fortran also has been used for a long time leading to a huge inventory of well debugged code. As far as teaching Fortran ... that's a separate issue.

Learn Programming - No Prior Experience Needed

I use Perl, but hear that Python is easier to learn. You can also try using a spreadsheet program to get the idea of how to lay out data and computations to get a desired result.

How do we breathe from nose when we eat?

This appears to me to be a significant advantage, especially for herbivores. The ability to chew and not restrict breathing allows for the crushing of the food over extended periods of time.

Is Labeling Evolution as Just a Theory in Textbooks a Reasonable Approach?

Drankin please take what was said in Expelled with a grain of salt. Here are a few of the incorrect notions in the movie: 1. The scene in the lecture hall was staged with extras, not students 2. The people that were 'fired' from the Smithsonian were never employees 3. The prof who went to...

Is Labeling Evolution as Just a Theory in Textbooks a Reasonable Approach?

The rocks are full of fossils, just not fish fossils. Bryozoans, ammonites, corals, crinoids, brachiopods, and trilobites to name some. No fish. No birds. No mammals. Marine refers to oceans and seas, i.e. saltwater.

Is Labeling Evolution as Just a Theory in Textbooks a Reasonable Approach?

Gnahtte, you act as if this is the first time such a false claim as you propose has been made. It is not. Let me give you a simple example. I've been to lots of creationist hoopla festivals so I know the sorts of statements and comebacks to expect. I have been to vast areas of limestone...

The Rainbow Thread: Seeing & Sharing Unusual Phenomena

The other day my son and I saw a circumzenith arc. It appeared across a mare's tail. It is an amazingly bright arc of rainbow colors. The colors are extremely vivid. Sorry did not have a camera with me.

Is Labeling Evolution as Just a Theory in Textbooks a Reasonable Approach?

Gnahtte, it appears you don't understand what scientists mean by theory. I recommend that you look it up. It does not mean what you think it does. You are quite correct in the numbers game. But, the problem is that your 'therefore' does not logically follow. Evolution is a fact. There are...

High School Home-Made Energy: Exercise Bike for TV?

A television set uses a certain amount of power. I saw a flat panel rated around 200W. A human on a bicycle can generate 75W. These are watts or power units: energy per unit time. So it seems possible to find a TV in the desired range. Some of the generators I've seen are in the range of $500...

Solving the Sum of 1+4+9+16+...+n^2 for n=x

I'm not saying that the formula is valid I'm simply saying evaluate it. When you do you get an expression without a cubic term.

Solving the Sum of 1+4+9+16+...+n^2 for n=x

Count Iblis the reason this is a technique and not a trick is that it allows a whole series of summation formulas to be created. The technique can be used to get the formula for sums of 1+2+ .. +n and anything else. This is not a trick exclusive to the sum of squares problem.
