Math REUs 2015: Updates on Program Acceptances

Is it common practice to send these update e-mails if you have not heard from anybody yet? I fear I'll sound like I'm rushing them in that case because I'm not under time pressure to accept any offers.

Has anybody heard from MAPS, Fairfield, ICERM(Their apps were very long ago I'm sure I got rejected at this point), Berkeley, or University of Michigan?

    Geodesic exponential map distance

Homework Statement Hi all. For some reason I have been having a lot of difficulty with this problem in Peter Petersen's text. The problem is Prove: ##d(exp_p(tv), exp_p(tw)) = |t||v-w| + O(t^2 )## Homework Equations The exponential map is the usual geodesic exponential map. And ##d(p,q)## is...

Hi all, I was wondering what the relationship between the Riemannian Geometry exponential map and the regular manifold exponential map and for the reason behind the name.

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

If I want to become an actuary or something in finance like a quant what are some good places to go for undergrad(Other than the usual MIT/Caltech/Harvard etc...) and what majors/dualmajors/minors are recommended? Is it best to major in applied math and minor in CS in this case?

    Is this quadrilateral tangential?

If you have a quadrilateral whose angles measure 90, 90, 60, 120 where the right angles are opposite each other does that mean that the quadrilateral is tangential. If it is can somebody show me how they arrived at that conclusion?

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?

If you want to be a successful mathematician do you have to be like those child prodigies or people who show aptitude in the subject very early in order for this to happen, or can you just get to that level through hard work and dedication? I'm asking because I just took up a serious interest...
