Finding area between 2 curves with 3 intersections

Thanks for the clarification. It turns out I did know what I was doing and I was doing the Calculus correct I just made a boo boo in my algebra, -x^2-(-x^2) is clearly not -2x^2 lol thanks so much though for taking the time to re-educate me :)!

Finding area between 2 curves with 3 intersections

Homework Statement I need help getting the area between 2*x^3-x^2-5*x and -x^2+2*x. I found the intersections at +/- sqrt(7/2) and 0. Homework Equations f(x)=2*x^3-x^2-5*x g(x)=-x^2+2*x The Attempt at a Solution This is the problem, I know that for something simple like x^2 and...

    Tire friction regarding contact area

Great job finding that. Wiki needs a little bit more help filling out a lot of their technical pages... come on physics forum, get on there and fix em up! ;)

MATLAB MATLAB ODE programing and misc question

First, I looked for a MATLAB forum here but didn't see one so if there is and I missed it let me know for future posts I have a few more questions. Second, this isn't ode related but plays a small part in the next, longer question. This is two parts: I have an i7 980x w/12GB of RAM 2 gtx 295s...

    Tire friction regarding contact area

So I was talking with my physics professor a while back about how friction force in a tire is independent of how much of the tire is in contact with the road. ie: Mu*(m*g) doesn't take into consideration the size of contact area and the friction is the same because essentially the weight (m*g)...

Rotating mass in vehicle drivetrain ?

I need help coming up with a formula for the following: If you have a source of power like from a motor that is coupled to a drivetrain such as what you would find in a car then what would be required to determine how much power is lost to the system? Not talking about basic physics with no...

What is the mass of air in a hot air balloon with these conditions?

Homework Statement A hot air balloon has a volume of 2000m^3, and air is always at atmospheric pressure due to large opening. What is the mass of the air if the temp is 120*c. Assume a molecular weight of 28.8g/mol for the air) Homework Equations PV=nrt The Attempt at a Solution...

Can We Overcome the Challenges of Space Travel Beyond Our Solar System?

What about someway of refueling once out of the atmosphere? How fast are you talking when you say they are sent at the best speed for the time, 20000, 30000 mph... more? what about 250000 far less than the speed of light but very fast?

Can We Overcome the Challenges of Space Travel Beyond Our Solar System?

Universe ?? So in books and pics online, you see the solar system in a single plane, if you want to travel great distances you use other planets gravity to swing you out there. What if we wanted to travel in ANY OTHER direction, could it be done? I heard that its not practical to send manned...

MATLAB Logic Functions in MATLAB: Troubleshooting and Homework

On an unrelated note I'm having a brain fart about something else. I have a file .dat and want to open it at the beginning of my m file so I can use its contents as a variable but I can't for the life of me remember what to type.

MATLAB Logic Functions in MATLAB: Troubleshooting and Homework

Hi there, I'm having some issues with logic functions in matlab. I don't use them very much so I'm not too familiar. What I'm trying to do is create an 'm' file for a physics project and I would like a certain progression. I'm trying to create some 'if' statements to do this. So first of all I...
