Admissions Fall 2009 Graduate Admissions Thread
It definitely is. Condensed matter has probably the greatest chance of any subdiscipline to get industry funding. For example, Intel sponsors a lot of my lab's work. Optics is not bad either.- jhicks

Students who cheat in introductory physics courses
When I was a TA I definitely saw many situations of cheating. The class I graded for was probably a 2nd or 3rd year class. Sometimes, people would turn in the same work (and of course since they were friends they would turn it in together so it was that much easier to spot), but since the...- jhicks

Selling Video Game Account: Deciding Between Sentimentality & Money
Well you can also make a city in a couple days. I had invested some of my down time over two years into this, so I got a bit sentimental. I ended up getting rid of it today -- thanks for snapping me to my senses! I'm not quite sure I will take a vacation, but a piece of furniture or two...- jhicks

Undergrad What is the relationship between gravity and a static force?
That's very funny that this has been brought up here. I was JUST reading an article in Time Magazine about WiTricity and they talked about transmitting electrons wirelessly. I just shook my head. OP you sound exactly like me in HS. I absolutely devoured the books by Kaku, Davies and...- jhicks

What is the best webhost for personal website?
Dynamic content might be something that is generated using server-side scripting such as PHP or ASP. These forums, for example, access a large database based on what variables we give it (e.g. thread #, post#) that contains a data structure that holds every forum post, so they're considered...- jhicks

Selling Video Game Account: Deciding Between Sentimentality & Money
Well, it's not exactly a collectible, but some might consider it worth obtaining. Currently, I'm considering selling off an account I have in a video game. I got a credible offer of about 500 dollars, but I still play it sometimes and it's somewhat valuable to me from a sentimental point of...- jhicks

Undergrad Graphene Introduction: Find a Good Textbook Here
What are you specifically looking at doing? Anyway, much of the theoretical discussion of carbon nanotubes is also applicable to graphene. Therefore, I suggest Saito and Dresselhaus(es), Physical Properties of Carbon Nanotubes. Currently, there are two different types of graphene research...- jhicks

How hard is it really to get into top school grad program
It's really hard to get into the best schools for undergrad if you aren't extremely well-rounded. Some highly qualified people get rejected from schools like MIT because MIT doesn't want a one-dimensional undergrad class. These same people who got rejected for undergrad have a much better shot...- jhicks

Programs What kind of credentials for EE PhD program?
It doesn't get you into a school but it will get you rejected if you blow it off. You should score around the average for the school you want to get into. An 800 is 80%-ile for EE's. This means it's all the more important to get an 800 because schools will be able to fill most of their...- jhicks

Programs What kind of credentials for EE PhD program?
A lot will hinge on your GRE score. Get above about 750 quant and 550 verbal and you'll get into a top 10 easily. EE programs aren't very competitive compared to say the hard sciences.- jhicks
