Does it matter where I am doing my PhD from?

I guess the difference is that you will have a much harder time convincing the people that you are good. For instance in mathematics there are always people like Igor Rodnianski (Ms St. Petersburg PhD Kansas State... ) who just pop up out of nowhere, often nowhere, Russia, because there...

Becoming a mathematician - I am so depressed

Proving general relativity wrong, come on. Of course the Institute for Advanced Study and Indiana University are encouraging him to play with Physics, but of course, if your 4 year old daughter teaches herself how to read and write (which happens quite often compared to calculus, I admit) you...

Help with math and thinking intuitively about it.

In my experience it also helps a lot to just try to really DO the proofs, when studying with a book. Read and "visualize" the statement and then think about how you would proof it. This helps (at least me) a lot in understanding the proof, because frames the problem much more and makes the steps...

Academic and Research Programs in Science, Math and Engineering

does anyone have any experience with compley systems? what universities offer good programs for that. the wiki article is still quite short, well, it's also more of an emerging field.

Programs How important is to do Optics in a Bachelor's degree physics course?

What exactly do you mean by "optics"? just advanced geometrical optics or also wave optics, quantum optics ? is is an experimental of a theoretical class ? I am studying in germany, it's ab bit different here, all of the curriculum as an undergrad is mandatory, but I still don't think that you...

    Internships as a Quantitative Analyst

Hello, I'm currently a 3rd semester Physics Student. I am not really sure in whit direction I want to go, I am tending towards theoretical physics rather than experimental, but I am also interested in ecomonics, so maybe becoming a "quants guy" might be a good idea, but compared with the...

How much time does it REALLY take?

yeah, even though I am still studying I know quite a numeber of post docs and doctoral students at my faculty. they all work al lot, but it is not really work for them, that's their life.

Physics in China: Programs, Universities & Advice

Hello, I am planning to go to China for two semesters after my fourth semester of studying Physics in Germany. Of course my main object is to improve my Chinese and learn about the cultue, but I would also like to gain academically. Can anyone give me a overview over the physics programs in...

Admissions Applying to MIT: Tips, Strategies & Experiences

just a litte off topic side note to that... I think given all those thoughts it is about time to critically question the role of the "elite" universities in world. Just go to ocw.mit.edu, there you can see lectures from the mighty MIT, if I look at the Physics and math lectures, they are no...

Do the two balls meet at the halfway point?

however, intuition often plays tricks on us, so, just for practice, you should consider doing the maths behind that and find out where exactly they meet, now since you know the fundamental difference between both motions.

Schools Top 10 Universities for Aerospace Engineering in the world

For Germany I know that TU Munich is most likely the best. There the masters and Ph.D. courses should be in English as well.

Testing How big is the SAT Physics curve?

when in high school in the US for my student exchange, the AP Calculus book contained an introduction to fractal geometry, but it was very general and we were never tested on it.

Force Components: Motion on xy-Plane, Non-Conservative Force

I can't make much sense of that either, however, a conservative force is a force that convserves mechanical work, so the force can not be "lost". For example gravitational force. If you have a ball and trow it down a building ( the building in physics haven in vacuum and stuff... ) and then put...

Solving the Physics Problem: Object Thrown Upward with Initial Speed of 8 m/s

i'm confused... so the object was thrown upward, flew for 3 seconds and then hit something ?
