I still feel you should pick a graduate school based on the type of research you want to do. Why go to a school where no one is doing the kind of research that creams your twinkie.

Jackson E&M book isn't hard. I love E&M and QM though =).

If probability is your cup of tea look into astrostatistcs.

You can have a social life but don't make the mistake I did. I had to leave the PHD program in physics cause I cared more about having fun than learning.

Its all about going to a school that does the kind of research you enjoy. Nothing else really ever mattered. Sure its nice to have a top name school but in the end it is your work that will speak volumes for you as a scientist.
