Nuclear energy in USA: why only 19%
Yeah, that's the average baseline according to the National Grid. I do of course understand that you'd have to factor in distribution and maintenance costs, etc. on top of that but it's still a very lucrative sector (at least until fusion comes along and puts them all out of business). As an...- Joshua McAnaney

Nuclear energy in USA: why only 19%
Yes, but bearing in mind that the current power demand in the UK alone is 30.57GW right now, spread out over that amount, that's a huge amount of money.- Joshua McAnaney

Nuclear energy in USA: why only 19%
WOW, just realized how much the energy companies are ripping us off. Not that I blame them, that's capitalism at it's finest, but seriously, that's a huge profit per kWh, especially when you consider just the baseline amount of energy required at any given time for, say, the US or the UK. That's...- Joshua McAnaney

My Theoretical Fusion Reactor- Looking For Feedback
Ok, so before I begin, I'd like to point out that I'm a 16-year-old GCSE student from the UK. Therefore all of my physics knowledge above high school level is self-taught, so I am by no means an expert. Anyway, I plan on building a deuterium reactor this Summer as a personal project, and I've...- Joshua McAnaney

Would you date or marry a nonintellectual?
Without trying to sound condescending, as long as you can have somewhat intellectual conversations with them I see no issue. It can be a drawback when one person in a relationship is very much an intellectual, and the other is not, as conversations can be pretty limited, but as long as they can...- Joshua McAnaney

Undergrad An Observation And A Question -- Why does metal arc in a microwave oven?
So, I'm new around here and I'm not entirely sure if this is in the right section, but today I noticed something which I found thought-provoking. Before I go into this, I should point out that I'm 16, so all of my physics knowledge above high-school level is entirely self-taught, so I still have...- Joshua McAnaney

What changed your mind about physics?
HI! :) I'm new here too, and I love physics as well. In fact, I used to hate physics when I first started out (didn't help that I had the world's most boring teacher, either), but now that I've moved on from basic forces, and I'm looking into quantum and theoretical physics, I can see how...- Joshua McAnaney

How Can Joining Physics Forums Enhance Understanding for Students?
Hi, everyone! Allow me to introduce myself. I am Josh, a student from the UK, and I hope to better my understanding of physics by joining the forums. I'm currently about halfway through my GCSEs, with the remaining few exams in the next couple of weeks, and I plan on taking maths, further maths...- Joshua McAnaney
