Centripetal acceleration A jet flies in a vertical circle
the vector for centripetal force always points towards the center and gravity points down, so add the vectors appropriately- jtpope2

Centripetal acceleration A jet flies in a vertical circle
you have the correct magnitudes for centripetal and gravitational force. you need to think about the direction of the force vectors and add them.- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
Thanks simon and all of you, I'll take all of your advice seriously. once again i apologize if i offended any of you. looks like i was the one being uneccesarily argumentative.- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
i guess this is where the confusion came in. I'm not looking for advice at all, I'm just looking for people's personal experiences with the class and their opinions on what the difficulty is. I'm sorry if i offended anyone or took things the wrong way. perhaps i didn't phrase my question...- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
i'm just about done arguing about this, some of you are being ridiculous. the courses are pretty standardized. no matter what university you go to or what professor you have, you're going to learn about lagrangians and hamiltonians and all the same methods.- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
you didn't want to give me advice, you just wanted to criticize the fact that I'm even asking for advice. I'm already considering my advisor's opinion, who left the option open but warned me that it's very difficult. because the option was left open by my advisor, i thought it might be a good...- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
i think you guys just like to argue. I'm not asking for the exact answer to the precise question "how well will I do in MY mechanics class", obviously there's no possible way you could answer that. why would I ask such a question? my question is, in your experience of the course, do you think...- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
haha dude... if i were asking "which is harder diff eq or calc III?", which is the sort of thing i see a lot of here, nobody would say "talk to your advisor, i don't know your university or professor or blahblah", people would just give their opinions on what the courses are like generally and...- jtpope2

Underemployed Liberal Arts Grad Thinking About Going Back for Engineering/Math.
This idea that some people are good at math and some people aren't I think is bull. I used to think I was bad at math in high school (never made better than a D), but once I got into lots of math/physics and it was all I was doing, I got good at it. It's a skill that you develop, like playing an...- jtpope2

What are the most time-consuming subjects in college?
I was in your exact same boat, I transferred from CC to four-year for electrical. I don't know what you've done, but you definently want to get your calc's and physics out of the way before they'll admit you into EE. your toughest classes at CC will be calc II/III, diff eq and physics II (which...- jtpope2

Navigating the Challenges of a Mechanical Engineering Degree
I transferred from community college to electrical engineering at a university, and it's definently not all down hill. the material doesn't get that much harder, but they will work you to the bone. also you'll probably be taking some engineering math classes (for mechanical, i think you have to...- jtpope2

Is Self-Teaching Calculus Possible and Effective?
differential calculus and basic integration are pretty easy to learn on your own (i remember doing the same in high school). when you get to tougher problems in integral caculus, it'll help to have a teacher walk you through it. there are a lot of good lectures and problem examples on youtube...- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
OK, thanks for the help. But I think it's reasonable to ask strangers on the internet who have had experience with the course to give me an idea of what I'll be getting myself into should I decide to enroll.- jtpope2

Considering enrolling in mechanics
My advisor didn't rule it out, he just warned me that it's a very hard course. I just want to get a sense of how difficult it is from actual student who have taken it; how many hours per week of study, average test grades etc. there's no reason to talk down to me.- jtpope2
