Math REUs 2012: When Can We Expect Decisions?
In my opinion, math research is by far the hardest research and least accessible for undergrads. Some areas are almost inaccessible because they require advanced knowledge that most undergrads haven't reached yet (after all this isn't bio, phys, or chem). The more accessible areas are number...- kamikaze1

Math REUs 2012: When Can We Expect Decisions?
The hardest and most well known math REUs are, surprisingly, in small schools. Two notable ones are REU University of Central Michigan and Dululth REU, they mostly have students from H, MIT (mostly Putnam kids). The REUs vary by research topics tho, so choose wisely for ones that trulyu interest u- kamikaze1

Courses Phys courses for biology research
I'm a biochem major at the same time, so I'll have 2 semesters of organic as well and plenty of bio classes. not too crazy about them since lots of classes are repetitive. The phys chem sequence is 2 semesters, i don't think i have enough spots to put them in my schedules; i jst think the phys...- kamikaze1

What is the maximum distance of a stable brick stack without overhang?
Homework Statement There are four identical uniform bricks each with length of L, so that the top brick is as far to the right as possible without the stack falling over. Is it possible to stack the bridge such that no part of the top brick is over the table. Namely, maximize the distance of d...- kamikaze1

Determining Minimum Height for Marble to Complete Loop-the-Loop
Never mind. Thanks for all your suggestions. I've just solved them. I left out the little tiny details which messed up the problems. I didn't take into account of the center of mass, which I paid dearly. Here is how I solved it. Initial energy: mg(h+r) At the loop, the radius is R-r because...- kamikaze1

Determining Minimum Height for Marble to Complete Loop-the-Loop
The last part is the kinetic rotational energy using I = (2/5)(M)(R^2) Using kinetic rotational energy = 0.5Iw^2, I have 0.5(2/5)(MR^2)w. using constraint wr=v, knowing that v=(rg)^0.5, I get 0.5(2/5)mr^(2)(v/r)^2 The answer isn't right.- kamikaze1

Determining Minimum Height for Marble to Complete Loop-the-Loop
Homework Statement A marble rolls down a track and around a loop-the-loop of radius R. The marble has mass m and radius r. What minimum height h must the track have for the marble to make it around the loop-the-loop without falling off? Homework Equations What minimum height h must the...- kamikaze1

What should I do to get into MIT, CalTech, etc?
Hey, I'm a college freshman who applied to MIT, Caltech, and GaTech last admission cycle, and got in 2 of them (Caltech and GaTech). As an incoming high school student, here are the things to look into. 1) You should get top grades in math and science classes (if not all classes) and SAT without...- kamikaze1

Should I Take Calculus 2 and 3 in High School?
If u truly want to become a mathematician and learn math in depth and want a good foundation, I suggest you look back at calc I and learn the theory behind it using a textbook different from the one ur high school used. here is a helpful link https://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=122924...- kamikaze1
