Schools Help translating grad school application form gobbledegook

Not going to lie.. I had to re-read this sentence a few times before it made some sense. I believe they are asking you to explain how your graduate studies are going to help you get to where you want to be professionally. What is it that you want to do with your career and how is the degree...

Programs Starting a PhD in the spring, a predicament I'm facing

I'm sorry for your loss; it does sound like you could benefit from immersing yourself in study. Congrats on your acceptance. I don't think your transferring should be considered unethical; I'd consider it pragmatic if you decide to go through with it, especially given your family situation. Good...

Computer Vision: What Engineering Field to Study?

Maybe not entirely what you're looking for, but have you considered opto-electronics, photonics, or optical engineering? If you're looking for systems that can track a moving target then look no further than modern avionics, which is a ton of math, physics, electrical engineering, optics...

What exactly do I talk about in my personal statement?

I agree with Natty... do your research (so to speak) on the schools and departments to which you are applying. Find out what the professors are working on in their labs and then spend a few hours on the internet researching those topics. Talk about how you'd love to be able to work with such and...

So I've decided to deliberately fail Calculus II?

When I was in school, students were allowed to drop a course and receive a "W," which stands for "Withdrawal," which stayed on one's transcript, but did not factor into one's GPA. The student then had to re-take the course with a passing grade to receive credit. I'd say that a "W" looks worse in...

Study techniques for intro to Chem?

Do your best to review your exam and homework assignment. Put a lot of effort into trying to understand where you went wrong (re-work the problems on separate paper). Once you've done this, take a visit your professor's office during the designated office hours for your course. Ask your...

What exactly am I qualified for?

Consider dropping the tools/oscilloscopes down to the bottom under a new header "other skills" or some such. I don't think you want them displayed so prominently for the types of jobs you seem to be seeking, but they're definitely valuable skills to have. As far as that job description, it's...

Engineering Do I have what it takes to be a biomedical engineer?

Lots of engineers don't take AP Physics in high school, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. You are probably ahead of the curve at this point. Even if you had passed the exam, you'd still want to repeat Physics in college if you were pursuing Engineering or Physics. With that same thought...

Engineering Engineering major having physics difficulty

I have to say that for most students, general physics is a pretty good indicator of how well one will perform in more advanced engineering classes. I can tell you that most engineering programs do not get any easier as you move ahead with your studies. With that said, there is no reason to...

What should be molten Lead Fluoride or Crayolite Contained In? (Best Crucible)

This is why I like replying to threads - I always learn something! I've never actually worked with cryolite, and hadn't looked into its usefulness. Not sure of it's compatibility with those materials and would have to research it myself.

What should be molten Lead Fluoride or Crayolite Contained In? (Best Crucible)

Have you tried graphite? Alumina would work in theory, as it has a higher melting point than either cryolite or PbF2, but then again it depends on your maximum process temperature and what you're trying to accomplish.

    News Gabrielle Gifford's first interview.

I'm happy for her and her family that she's made so much progress. All things considered, she seems to have been very lucky. It's stories like this that really make me wonder what life is all about.

News Libyan forces have captured Muammar Gaddafi

"Closure" is in the eye of the beholder, in my opinion.
