Optimizing Pump Mixing in a Dual Pump System for Titrations
So, this seemed most appropriate for this forum, as it's essentially a question about pumps, pressures, and fluid mechanics. The set up I have that this question pertains to; There are two pumps that have lines running to a T-joint with a small chamber to allow for mixing before exiting...- LtStorm

Can Deuterium Engines Power the Future of Science Fiction?
Followed this topic over from the chemistry sub-forum. Just had one comment to make. Out of all of the reasons to be skeptical of Miley, the fact he uses platinum in his experiments is the most specious of reasons. Using platinum as a catalyst in a reaction for cold fusion is not the same...- LtStorm

Alchemy? Did anyone ever figure out how to change base metals into gold?
Yeah, there were a lot of fanciful additions to the steps to creation the stone, such as the nigredo step needing to start with soil taken from the Nile river's delta, but most of the procedures specified you had to meditate on the work as you were heating and working with it. There are a... -

Alchemy? Did anyone ever figure out how to change base metals into gold?
I actually read a couple of books on the history of alchemy, as I was interested in how it provided the basis for chemistry (as a chemist). One thing I've learned is, the only people attempting to transmute lead to gold were bad alchemists. There are two things associated with alchemy... -

Calculating Quantum Yields for Fluorescent Dyes
So, I'm trying to work out a method of calculating quantum yields for some samples that contain fluorescent dyes. I've dug around and found a procedure for how to do it, which was essentially the same as doing an extinction coefficient (take a sample, run its fluorescence and absorbance... -

Happiness vs Money: Grad School Advice
So, I'm at an interesting crossroads I hadn't quite expected. I'm about three months into graduate school in chemistry, I've finished two month long rotations with two professors (I have a third rotation to do, then need to select who I'll be working with for the duration of my time at graduate...- LtStorm

Schools Will My Senior Year Grades Affect College Admission?
Community colleges are a good way to slip into university under the radar, in a way. I came out of high school with a 1.9 GPA and a 29 on the ACT, mostly because I went through the whole apathetic teenager phase and never put any effort into my classes, but would've been able to do so if I'd...- LtStorm

Data from a digital polarimeter?
Not sure if this is where this really belongs, as it's a question about equipment rather than actual chemistry, but, it's equipment that's usually used by chemists, so I figured I'd have the best chance of something being familiar with it here. It's a simple question really; what does the... -

Waters 440 Absorbance Detector for HPLC?
Hmm, I'll try to snap some pics with the camera in my cellphone, though I don't know how good they'll come out. Well, after toying with it more, I've come to the conclusion it is some sort of photovoltaic device. After getting the new rigging set up for it, I finally had it so I could connect...- LtStorm

Waters 440 Absorbance Detector for HPLC?
Not sure whether or not this should go here, but this seemed like the most accurate place since my question is about how an instrument works. I have an old unused Waters 440 Absorbance Detector for HPLC that I've scavenged for parts to try to digitize an old polarimeter. What I'm trying to...- LtStorm

Water-Powered Car: Breaking the Molecular Bond & Burning Hydrogen
I usually see water written as "HOH," as it makes it more clear what you have. Otherwise it'd be H_{2}O.- LtStorm

Water-Powered Car: Breaking the Molecular Bond & Burning Hydrogen
An official chemical name would be one created using IUPAC's nomenclature system. But, you're right, the word I should have used was 'common' chemical name, which is 'oxyhydrogen.'- LtStorm

Does the reaction between H2SO4 and NH4OH produces ammonia?
Looks like it'd be a basic neutralization reaction, producing ammonia sulfate and water as products. I suppose that'd leave a little ammonia from the ammonia sulfate dissociating in solution, but other than that, no, it's not going to like, give off gaseous ammonia.- LtStorm

The Function of the Ceramic Disk in an HP 5971A Mass GC-MS
Not sure where exactly this should go, as it's a hardware question rather than a homework problem or question about the theory behind it, so, sorry if it's the wrong place. But, I've been working on getting an old HP 5971A mass GC-MS up and running over the past semester, and there's a part...
