How can adjacent air be accounted for in fresh air exchanges for HVAC systems?
No. It's an older system where multiple small heat pumps (2 to 5 Ton) are spread through the clinic and all supplied from one DOAS. That's a great way to view it and one that I logically agree with. One caveat I worry about is the ASHRAE Standard specifically says the lab requires 2 "Outside...- MacLaddy

How can adjacent air be accounted for in fresh air exchanges for HVAC systems?
Good morning folks. I have a question about fresh air in an HVAC system. The explanation I provide are a bit tedious, but the question is eventually asked towards the bottom. I am evaluating a negative air pressure room for a small medical laboratory. Using ASHRAE 170, I know this room needs to...- MacLaddy

Engineering Project Engineer to Design Engineer
Ahh, yes. I see your point. The fact I missed that twice is a bit embarrassing. I am speaking of Machine Design. Odd that I wouldn't consider MEP Design, as I'm indirectly involved with that daily. I feel pretty confident in what I would need to move into the MEP design field. My apologies...- MacLaddy

Engineering Project Engineer to Design Engineer
I feel like I need to address this comment a little more directly. Have you read engineering job requirements lately? Most of the time they are completely convoluted, and they frequently contradict themselves. The first line will read, "Looking for an Entry Level Design Engineer for..." and then...- MacLaddy

Engineering Project Engineer to Design Engineer
Thank you, berkeman. You mentioned a few bullet points that will be very useful. I'm a 3-D Printing enthusiast, so I'll keep that in mind as something I may want to expand on. Maybe I'll make a binder and start documenting my projects and thought processes. Also, you shouldn't sell yourself...- MacLaddy

Engineering Project Engineer to Design Engineer
I’m wondering what skills are needed to go from being a project engineer (in the construction industry) to that of a mechanical design engineer? More specifically, what exactly is an employer looking for when they hire a design engineer? We all know that any good engineer should have great...- MacLaddy

How Can I Ensure My Torsion Spring Is Strong Enough for the Load?
A quick and dirty spreadsheet calculation shows a maximum hanging mass of about 8 kg before extending past the leg length of 60mm. I wouldn't hang my hat on these numbers, but you might be a bit undersized.- MacLaddy

Pressure loss in an HVAC system
Thanks. I'll start working on compiling some of that information, and begin learning how to compile the rest. It's definitely an educational process at this point. I fear that I may have to lean on PF a bit for mentoring during the next few months. But I'll definitely have fun. What better...- MacLaddy

Pressure loss in an HVAC system
I added a second page on that worksheet named 50%. It is simply half of the airflow for the entire system. It still calculates a pressure loss of 1.8". Considering that the air handler goes into alarm if it goes above two inches, this definitely implies a problem. Now the real question is...how...- MacLaddy

Pressure loss in an HVAC system
Let's just say that I have been given a unique opportunity for learning. I've been brought in as an entry level mechanical engineer that has a lot of HVAC troubleshooting experience. However, I am the ONLY Mechanical Engineer in the vicinity. I'm surrounded by Civil PE's at every corner. I have...- MacLaddy

Pressure loss in an HVAC system
The first spreadsheet was a bit of a mess. I've cleaned it up some and used K-Factors from the EngineeringToolbox website. So please...ignore that first excel doc. Use this one instead. It is iterative from the start of the run until the end, so the numbers don't match up exactly with my labels...- MacLaddy

Pressure loss in an HVAC system
I'm trying to reverse engineer the original work. There have been multiple problems in this facility for years regarding airflow. As a newly minted engineer this project is being presented to me as both a learning/training opportunity to see how these systems are originally designed, as well as...- MacLaddy

Pressure loss in an HVAC system
The ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals references a Duct Fitting Database. I've found it here at this link. https://www.ashrae.org/resources--publications/bookstore/duct-fitting-database Do you know if the handbook alone is sufficient to get through a problem like this, or would I also need to...- MacLaddy
