    Thought experiment about fluid compressibility

Water (and every other material) is compressible, which can be proven by observing the propagation of sound. The thing is that the compressibility of liquids (including water) is not very different from the compressibility of solids - as compared to gases, which can be compressed considerably...

How to deal with published (and indexed) baloney?

The journal published by Elsevier I had in mind is Chaos, Solitons and Fractals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elsevier#Chaos.2C_Solitons_.26_Fractals). I am not saying that Elsevier nor AIP are baloney publishers. I am saying that sometimes they publish baloney. So, my question is: how does one...

How to deal with published (and indexed) baloney?

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry, but I'd rather not be specific on the volume, because I want the question to be general. If I recall correctly, a few years ago there was an almost self-published journal (editor published his own papers) by Elsevier that had a lot of baloney, and many people...

How to deal with published (and indexed) baloney?

There is an entire volume of AIP Conferences full of baloney. The volume is indexed by several agencies, like NASA ASD, Scopus, etc. How does one deal with it? I'm thinking of putting a comment on arxiv.org, but I'm willing to comment only on one paper, because I do not want to spend time...

How Much Does It Cost to Sell Authorship of a Scientific Paper?

I'm about to sell a scientific paper (give authorship to another person), publishable to a moderately high impact factor journal. What would be the price range? :-)

Advertising Study: Can Undergrad Chemistry Courses be Posted on PF?

I hope you don't mind posting the post itself below. I've marked with XXXX parts that could be understood as advertising. Personally, I do not gain anything from this. The reason for posting this is that I've studied at this University and I'd love to see more "westerners" study in this -...

Advertising Study: Can Undergrad Chemistry Courses be Posted on PF?

To post calls = to post invitations, to place on the forum the information about the course and the contact details for further inquiries. Basically, I'm asking whether I can start a thread and post an advertisement for an undergraduate course in chemistry...

Advertising Study: Can Undergrad Chemistry Courses be Posted on PF?

Hi, is there a place on PF where one can post calls for undergraduate chemistry courses? I checked - admittedly, briefly - guidelines and forums, but couldn't find anything against it, but on the other hand, I do not want to be rude and post something that is against the spirit of the site...

What Happens to Light When It Reflects Off a Mirror?

Very very erroneous thinking! Light doesn't accelerate, neither decelerate. In the moment it irradiates the mirror, light excites the electrons that make the mirror and, if you wish, stops existing. Electrons stay excited for about a few nanoseconds, and then release their excess energy in the...

What is the process of photon emission in atoms?

Hmm, yes, it is there, but you will never know that it is there, unless you excite it. But, if you excite it, some might argue, aren't you creating it? I hope this has helped you departure from your initial picture where photon was a thing that can enter electrons. It might be so, but that...

What is the process of photon emission in atoms?

Being timeless is not the same as being forever. Or, as an illustration, being massless is not the same as nonexistence (or, at the other end, omnipresence). Timelessness just says that you can't measure the existence of a photon with a clock (why?)

What is the process of photon emission in atoms?

Photon is timeless, it's not created... It just is in the electron (as energy, if you wish), or around it (as the field, again, if you wish), and it is transmitted or absorbed. There is quite a nice explanation about this on Hecht's Optics.
