    What is (physical) information?

Hello PF! (Not sure this is in the right section.) I've learned very little about maths/physics in school, but went back to uni last year to do maths. Physics is still a bit of an alien territory, but nevertheless I like exploring it in my own amateur way. One of the things that started...

Can all real numbers be written down with an infinite amount of time and people?

I have a question to the OP, I am interested what was the motive behind this idea? What is your idea of infinity?

What happens when we rise a number to the power of i ?

    Great, thank you micromass :)

What happens when we rise a number to the power of i ?

I am still struggling to find what actually n^i (in this case, to make it easier 2^i) is. Wolfram Alpha gives me the complex number 0.76923... + 0.63896... i = 2^i But when I try to convert it into polar exp form, I get a different result 2 can be represented as 2e^(i2pi) (at least I...

What happens when we rise a number to the power of i ?

Thank you, that makes it all perfectly clear :) If I understand it correctly, this also implies that if I wanted to express let's say 2^i, I would need to first express 2 in polar form and then rise it to the power of i? (I think so).

What happens when we rise a number to the power of i ?

Hi, I have taken some math classes recently, but I feel that they opened some new questions. I am specifically unclear about complex numbers. I have understood how they can be added, divided, multiplied and subtracted algebraically, and then represented on the Argand diagram (is this the same...

Studying What is the reality of studying maths in the UK?

Hi, I was wondering if someone could share their experiences of doing an undergrad degree in maths in the UK, and particularly the way the subjects are introduced at the start. (Directions to more info would also be appreciated :)) I am originally from Germany (but have lived in the UK...

Math Is a career in mathematics only for early starters?

Thank you for your replies posted by story645: I am only at the start of my adventure with mathematics, and I think considering a career in it personally would be a bit far fetched at the moment, but wanted to know what is the reality of the profession, because currently it is all a bit...

Math Is a career in mathematics only for early starters?

I have read stories of "late bloomers" who retrain and manage to establish a successful career in other disciplines, but does it happen in mathematics, specifically in pure mathematics? As an outsider, I don't really have much experience or knowledge of how things work in this discipline...
