Could an admin please move this thread to the Astrophysics section? I think it might be better suited there. Thanks!- montreal1775

Graduate 1st Law of Black Hole Mechanics
Hi all, In looking at the first law of black hole mechanics, I can see the immediate analogy between surface gravity and temperature, black hole mass and energy, and area and entropy. But is there any meaningful analogy between pressure and spin, and volume and angular momentum? Thanks for...- montreal1775

Undergrad Black Hole Thermodynamics Resources?
Thanks for both recommendations. Winitzki's introduction seems like it gives a good overview. The Poisson text is too advanced for me though.- montreal1775

Undergrad Black Hole Thermodynamics Resources?
Does anyone know of any good books, papers, articles, or any other resource that discuss the thermodynamics (history of, theory, current research, etc.) of black holes? Preferably something at the advanced undergraduate level. Thanks for any advice!- montreal1775

Lorentz Contraction and Chalk Guns
Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I should have mentioned the next part of the question was to calculate the time between adjacent guns firing in the rod's frame. With v=sqrt(3)*c/2, I found the time difference to be -1/sqrt(3) *10^-9 s, which matches the solutions. I'm having trouble finding the...- montreal1775

Lorentz Contraction and Chalk Guns
But isn't the 1 meter distance the proper length? Since all the guns fire simultaneously in the lab frame, isn't the measured 1 meter the proper length? If so, I don't see how the distance could be measured to be greater than 1 meter in the rod frame. Even if this isn't the case, why do I get...- montreal1775

Lorentz Contraction and Chalk Guns
Homework Statement This is actually an exam problem, not a homework problem. The solution have been posted, but I don't understand the solution. Here is the question, as posted: A very long rod travels parallel and very close to a flat surface in our laboratory. The surface contains...- montreal1775

Rolling Paper: Analyzing Motion and Energy
Homework Statement A large, cylindrical roll of paper of initial radius R lies on a long, horizontal surface with the open end of the paper nailed to the surface. The roll is given a slight shove (initial velocity is negligible) and begins to unroll. Determine the speed of the center of mass...- montreal1775

What is the rotational inertia of a cube when rotated about an edge?
So would it be I = \iiint_{0}^{L} x^2+y^2+z^2 \,dxdydz where L is the length of a side?- montreal1775

What is the rotational inertia of a cube when rotated about an edge?
I=integral(r^2,m) but then what do I do? I'd use the parallel axis theorem but I don't know how to find the rotational inertia for a cube about it's center of mass.- montreal1775
