    Double Substitution Correct or Faulty?

Hey. I was reviewing some trig substitution and I know how to solve the problem but I was curious if you can also solve it by using two different substitutions/change of varaibles? If so, how would you relate the functions? Consider for example: ∫ (1-x^2)^1/2 dx, -1<= x <= 1 x = sin Θ dx...

    Being comfortable while doing math

Because I tend to tilt my neck down and lean forward while I am doing my work. I've been trying harder to get over that habit and I am making good progress. When I have to go get a drink, food, use the bathroom, want a break, or I am finished. I don't get up to stretch though. I do like to take...

    Being comfortable while doing math

What math do you use it for? I can imagine it would be inefficient if it is a subject where you like to draw graphs and diagrams like in my PDE class. But higher up where it gets more abstract I can see it being helpful. But you have to erase the information afterwards, what is your method...

    Being comfortable while doing math

Doing math for any extended period is very stressful on the neck. What do you guys do or suggest to combat this? I was thinking that maybe buying a book stand and using it to write while standing upright might take off some of the discomfort, but I haven't found one that would do very well.

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks a lot recurFactor.

Matlab Recursion Problem - Need help Understanding It

Sorry for the brief response, I have an exam early tomorrow. I won't need this for the exam so no rush. I have a question about what I did before, written below. subsetsum([3 2 4], 7) length (v) == 0? No. go on t == v(1). 7==3? no. go on. subsetsum([2,4], 7) recursive call to top length(v)...

Matlab Recursion Problem - Need help Understanding It

Nevermind, I can see that it works but I have no idea how it works. There is no way I can discern its mechanism without being able to look at its underlying principles. There is probably a good mathematical proof behind this convoluted non-intuitive method- I hope. I will give it credit: the...

Matlab Recursion Problem - Need help Understanding It

Hey recurFactor, I'm majoring in biomathematics for undergrad. To me the first two conditions seem to be the base cases, and the rest aren't because they are making recursive calls. Base case 1: if length(v) == 0 Base case 2: if t == v(1) Not sure if this would be a base case since it comes...

Matlab Recursion Problem - Need help Understanding It

They give me this problem in my last exam, I did not get it right - its a very convoluted and I think poorly worded problem. Rants aside, how am I supposed to be able to answer a problem like this on the next exam? What sort of mindset will help me deal with recursion problems of this form? How...

Linear Algebra Book Recommendation for Visual-Spatial Learners?

Definitely, I believe that it can enhance high level learning/understanding of the material versus simply memorizing things in words -- especially for visual learners. Look at people such as Feynman and Einstein for example - they were able to make leaps and bounds because they weren't tied down...

Linear Algebra Book Recommendation for Visual-Spatial Learners?

Can someone please recommend a linear algebra book that will be more visual friendly. I like to understand the concepts visually and the book that my class is using doesn't fit me too well. I am using Elementary Linear Algebra by Spence and Friedberg.

Geometrical Interpretation of V in Span S

Just an introductory linear algebra class. I don't know much about applications of LA first hand, but I do know it is applied in many things that involves a large numbers of computations, things such as digital processing to be specific, or computational neuroscience to be general (I plan to...

Geometrical Interpretation of V in Span S

Thanks. So literally the geometric interpretation is that V lies in S, in which S itself spans a 3-dimensional place. Now can I politely ask, what is the motivation behind this? What does it apply to?

Geometrical Interpretation of V in Span S

Thanks! So essentially V lies in Span S if it also lies in the plane of S. You gave me an example of two vectors laying in the plane. But what about when there are three vectors in Span S that do not all lie in a common plane?

Geometrical Interpretation of V in Span S

What does it mean geometrically to say that V lies in span S, in other words that V is in a linear combination of S?
