Why did we search for higgs boson when we knew it couldn't be useful?

Let me try to make peace by turning this discussion on its head. Is it possible, that the next great quest in physics could be the quest to find a use for all the things you just mentioned in addition to Higgs?

Why did we search for higgs boson when we knew it couldn't be useful?

Nope. I have not. It's simply a matter of priorities. Since LHC operates under tight constraints it might have been better to put Higgs Boson on the back burner unless....unless... Someone can find a use for the particle.

Why did we search for higgs boson when we knew it couldn't be useful?

Like I said, the LHC will find many things that are useful to humanity. Brout-Englert-Higgs Boson was not one of them. ZapperZ to clarify; could it have been used for other things instead of finding Higgs

Why did we search for higgs boson when we knew it couldn't be useful?

Would it have been possible not to search for Higgs Boson after the LHC was constructed?

Why did we search for higgs boson when we knew it couldn't be useful?

So that I don't leave this thread "cold" I will have one more post reviewing what I learned. Higgs Boson is ironic. It is the particle that is the critical part of the standard model and its discovery was hailed as a great achievement of physics, except it's possibly the one thing that...

Why did we search for higgs boson when we knew it couldn't be useful?

Wow. These are really thoughtful replies. I suppose part of my confusion lies with the fact that I have a different way of seeing knowledge. To me knowledge is at its most meaningful and useful when combined with imagination. The trees did not evolve to be our houses, nor do the rushing rivers...

Why did we search for higgs boson when we knew it couldn't be useful?

Firstly, thank you all for creating this forum, thank you all for tolerating my questions. As an expert in another subject, I know it's not easy to take time out of one's schedule to answer the questions of non-experts, and I am grateful that you guys have. That said, this question is a...

May I suggest an experiment concerning negative energy?

I've been informed that there is no consesus on the matter and for that matter there has been no experiment that proves or disproves the existence of negative energy.

Can you move particles by cooling them?

I suppose it does, but what I really am asking about is HUP.

Can you move particles by cooling them?

Ok then lets look at a situation that is the reverse. In a neutron star particlewaves are compressed to a very diffinitive postion so then the momentum of the particleswaves must become less diffinitive. Assuming the neutron star is less than 3 times the mass of the sun it does not collapse; is...

Can you move particles by cooling them?

I am feel more uncertain than ever now. I have been told many times that recognizing that particles have wave like properties is the key to understanding the uncertinty princaple and yet when I look at an ocean wave I clearly see its crest, trouph, where they are and where they are going...

Can you move particles by cooling them?

Can you "move" particles by cooling them? Suppose you have an object made of particles and you cool it down alot. I would assume then that the average momentum of the particles would be reduced therefore we could know more about the particles' momentum and therefore less of the particles'...

May I suggest an experiment concerning negative energy?

I don't think the general idea of quntam intrest and the Casimir box (I love that term by the way)need always be seprate. If quntam intrest is indeed true then it means there could be some method of moving the displaced postive energy outside of the box while keeping the conjectured negative...

    Yes...that's what I meant.

May I suggest an experiment concerning negative energy?

Well in the mean time I will draw people's attention to this article, http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/gr-qc/9901074 It decribes an attempt to seprate positive energy from negative energy. The authors claim it can be done, but there are strong restrictions. Most notably any pulse of negative energy...
