Skywatcher 5.1 parabolic reflector for DSO?

Thanks guys for taking the time out to reply in such detail. Very helpful indeed! Here's a review of this scope (obviously it's going to be a pretty positive review as it's linked from the manufacturers own site!): http://www.skywatchertelescope.net/13065Review.html

Skywatcher 5.1 parabolic reflector for DSO?

Skywatcher 5.1" parabolic reflector for DSO? Hi, I've been scanning the night skies with my trusted 12 X 50 binoculars up until now and want to move onto a reflector for deep-space objects. Budget and portability have pointed me towards the below scope and i wondered whether any other...

If sound moves faster through ?

If sound moves faster (better?) through dense materials such as wood or metal as compared to air (over ten times quicker through glass i believe) then what's the "scientific" explanation for why putting a sheet of glass or some other barrier between you and the speaker ends up quietening the...

Why c2 (speed of light squared)?

Could someone kindly describe/set out the equation's derivation or point me to a web page?

Why c2 (speed of light squared)?

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but in the famous equation e = mc2 why is the speed of light squared? I recently read E=mc2: A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation by David Bodanis... thoroughly enjoyed it... but the answer to this question eludes me. Can anyone help in layman's terms...

Stargazing Choosing a Telescope Under $700

Whichever you go for, make sure you read an independent review first. You'll find lots of reviews listed here: http://www.scopereviews.com/list.html http://www.weatherman.com/scope.htm For example, the Orion scope given in the previous post is reviewed here...

You Are the Centre of the Universe

Isn't that what the questioner already concluded? "Surely this means that I (and everyone else) can logically claim to be the centre of the universe."

    Measuring the distance of stars

Is the parallax method still the one most widely used (for the relatively nearer stars at least)? More particularly, is it still the case that we take one measurement then wait six months until the Earth is on the other side of the sun and take a second measurement? Or has this been superseded...

Questions About Black Holes - Answers for Non-Physics Students

I believe the cone/funnel shape more accurately depicts a black-hole having a singularity... therefore large at the top, tapering to a point (the singularity). If I'm not mistaken, Kerr holes - rotating black holes - are formed (in theory at least) by a rotating ring of neutrons with the...

Stargazing Looked through a telescope for the first time

Might sound silly but trying looking straight down instead... position a good mirror on the ground which captures the part of the sky you want to look at and then point and focus your telescope at the mirror. It's a popular technique used with binoculars... see here...

    Do photons keep atoms stable?

In the last month I've read: - Light Years and Time Travel (Brian Clegg)... the chapter on QED sparked my interest in the topic. - Schrodinger's Kittens and the Search for Reality (John Gribbin) - The Elegant Universe (Brian Greene) Still, most of what's been said in this thread is...

    Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified

Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified by Richard Wolfson Undoubtedly one of the best primers on special and general relatively in my view. Finished reading it a few weeks back and am delighting in dipping into various sections again. By far the best book I've read on the topic so far - and...
