Is there a scientific consensus on what "consciousness" is?

Or is there scientific consensus on whether or not "consciousness" actually exists at all? This article prompted the question... "Many theories have been proposed, but none has passed scientific muster. I believe a major change in our perspective on consciousness may be necessary..."...

Where EXACTLY is the Mass of an Atom? Proton? Quark? Hadron? Gluon?

There just seems to be such a huge and obvious disconnect! Drop a rock on your foot = ouch! Whack a rock upside your head = really ouch! That thing has mass! It seems so obvious. But apparently it is not. Where is the mass in that rock? Well, y'know, it just obviously, like, has mass, or...

Where EXACTLY is the Mass of an Atom? Proton? Quark? Hadron? Gluon?

So mass is the result of an interaction? With a field? The interaction of what with a field? And is an "interaction" another way of saying "energy", or not? And you mean we have to do more experiments because we really don't know? Is all of this to say that we really don't know what-the-heck...

Where EXACTLY is the Mass of an Atom? Proton? Quark? Hadron? Gluon?

Well I guess the question is -- is there any such thing as matter at all, or is there ONLY energy? What is the distinction? When you look closely into a proton, where is the "matter", or is there no such thing, there is only energy that just appears to be matter but only at a certain scale?

Where EXACTLY is the Mass of an Atom? Proton? Quark? Hadron? Gluon?

Right, I get that. But if you hold a rock in your hand (apparently a bunch of matter), and you look closer and closer at it, where is the actual "matter" and where is the "energy"?

Where EXACTLY is the Mass of an Atom? Proton? Quark? Hadron? Gluon?

Where EXACTLY is the "Mass" of an Atom? Proton? Quark? Hadron? Gluon?? Just look at the simplest Hydrogen atom -- one Proton. The question is *where* exactly is the mass of this thing? Or *what* makes up the mass of this thing? Is it just Quarks? So where is the *mass* of those things? Where is...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

So where is the "symphony piece"? It is a concept in human minds. Where is a constellation? It is a concept in human minds. Where does the dark side of the moon end and the light side begin? Only in a mind. When you see two things, where is "two"? There is no such thing as "two", that is only a...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

Oh my god, that is awesome... you get it! All of my crazy-sounding messages ALL point to this same thing... everything, everything, everything that you THINK exists in Reality, doesn't. And most importantly, that means YOU. When you finally get that, then understand the implications...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

The self "appears" to exist? Where's the proof? Scientific proof? If there is only debate, then stop assuming. Then the answer is: There is no self. All the "ranting" leads to that one question. All of it. Does the self exist? "None of that is scientific" -- Nor is assuming the self exists...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

I guess I don't understand. It seems clear to me that you are making an assumption or you are clinging to a belief. Both of which are non-scientific. You say, "It seems the more we learn the less 'special' we see ourselves." Right! So why do we assign to ourselves the belief or assumption...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

Awesome JoeDawg! You have bumped right up against perhaps the most important part of any discussion of reality. But I believe you have made a fundamental -- and incorrect -- assumption. AND WE ALL DO IT! We all make this same error. Myself included. And I believe most scientists would...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

Only one of the authors I referred to temporarily suffered from a brain injury. During that time she experienced a different way to use her brain, although she did not intend for this to happen. The other authors I referred to (and there are MANY more, and have been for thousands of years) also...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

I wonder why your statements are so definitive? Are you saying reality is what everyone else says it is? Or what is most obvious? Isn't that the opposite of Science? Do you know why Galileo was imprisoned? EDIT: Stop using colored font. --> sorry, I have posted many times with colored font...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

I believe you are making an assumption when you say, "no past experiences and not use reasoning (impossible for a human)". I believe what these brain scientists are clearly saying is that you have different parts of your brain that work differently. Most crudely, the Left half does all the...

What Is Reality? Can Anyone Define It?

Yes, what Jill Taylor experienced was a malfunctioning brain, so you would expect it to be messed up. But my understanding is you can use your equipment differently, and have a different experience of reality. And when this happens you "know" this new version is more accurate. Very excellent...
