Is it possible to work with pharmaceuticals as a chemical engineer?
Yes. If your school has some form of bio specialization, it would be good to do that, but I know plenty of chemE's who are going to work for pharma. They'll work with more the production of drugs in a large-scale manufacturing setting. If you want to design/create them, a phd in biochemistry or...- Null_

Summer 2013 Math and Science REU Thread
I applied to several programs this year. One program said they will notify students by March 1st. I'm going backpacking on March 1st and will be away from email and phone for 11 days. Should I send them an email tomorrow explaining this? I'm worried that they might only give a week or so to make...- Null_

Molecular Modeling and Simulations
Hi all, I am currently a junior in chemical engineering and want to go to graduate school for it. I am extremely interested in the materials side of renewable energy. To make a long story short, I don't enjoy being in the lab much but really do enjoy thinking about it, researching, and...- Null_

What is a Major Average in Physics?
Now I'm curious.. My major GPA will be listed on my transcript as calculated just from my major's courses. Other courses are required for my major, including some math, chemistry, and physics courses. If I include these, my major GPA would be higher. Should I list my major GPA as it is...- Null_

What is a Major Average in Physics?
My school calculates major average based only on the courses in our major. In applying for summer programs, I have put that as my major GPA, so in your case, I believe it should be just physics courses. If it is different from this, then I will be happy. I'm just a junior though, so I have no...- Null_

I need a foolproof method of prioritizing schoolwork
Something I have found that has helped me tremendously with deadlines is creating deadlines of my own. I do this by pushing EVERYTHING due forward one day. So if I have a test on Tuesday, I study all weekend as if it were on Monday. The same goes for homework assignments. Since classes are...- Null_

Schools ADHD & Physics: Finding a Career Path
You obviously did well enough in undergrad physics to get to grad school physics. It seems like, pardon me for saying this if it isn't true, your diagnosis made your condition worse? I am sure there are people (medical or counselors) who can help you focus...- Null_

Tutoring opportunity beneficial?
I tutor first and second level calculus and physics 6 hours a week, and I think it's a great way to earn a little cash while solidifying your knowledge of the basics. If you have the time, I'd say do it. I currently tutor groups of 5-8 students, so I think it has helped my communication and...- Null_

Summer study abroad vs. engineering internship
Thanks for the response. I'm not against manufacturing; I realize society (and I) rely on it, and I think it would be cool to see a product go through all stages of development through production. However, this isn't where my passion lies. I don't look at an assemble line and think "oh my god...- Null_

Summer study abroad vs. engineering internship
Hey guys, I'm having difficulty deciding what I want to do next summer. I'm currently a junior, so this is the last opportunity I have to do an engineering internship. Last summer I did an REU. I know I want to go into the renewable energy field, but I don't know if I need to go to grad...- Null_

I've realized I hate being in a lab, but love another
I'm doing an REU this summer in a topic that was incredibly interesting to me based on my previous research experience. I love working in that lab, and everyone is nice and well-rounded. The PI is easy to talk to, even though he's busy. This summer though, I'm working at a very highly ranked...- Null_

Practical, interesting chemistry book
I have taken general chem 1&2 and orgo chem 1&2, but I honestly don't know how the chemistry I know relates or is used in anything. I can write page long synthesis and mechanisms, but I don't really know what I'm making, if it's safe, or if it's impossible. I only have one chemistry class left...- Null_

Schools REU -> Grad school at that University
I'm sorry to hear that. I imagined that would the be the case for many of these programs, but I will try to remain optimistic as I hear REU admissions are also a crapshoot. Perhaps one could get lucky twice.- Null_

Schools REU -> Grad school at that University
This summer I am going to participate in a REU program at a top school for my field. I'm not a super spectacular student but get decent grades and do some quality research (but no publications yet). Honestly, I'm not quite sure why they picked me, as several of my peers with better grades (but...- Null_
