A question for Graduate students and higher

In our PhD program, we have to pass exams on four divisions of chemistry in the first year (inorganic, organic, analytical, physical; there's no biochem exam). I'm at Wisconsin right now, and looking at the comments above it seems like those exams are par for the course. Your idea is...

Do 3 electron bonds really exist?

kichigai... Where in Cotton and Wilkinson did you see that about three electron bonds?

Can You Compose a Molecule from H NMR Signals and Given Formula?

noxflos... Actually, it's good that you asked, and for my part I'm sorry that I sounded condescending in answering it. There's only one way to learn to interpret NMR spectra and that's practice, practice, and ... more practice.

Chemical Bonding: Ionic Bond Test, Graphite & Diamond Properties

2a. Graphite has strong covalent bonds in one plane, but extremely weak bonds (pi bonds) connecting each plane. The hybridization in this case is sp2. This makes it extremely weak since those bonds can be broken with extraordinary ease. 2b. Diamond has strong covalent bonds in all...

Can You Compose a Molecule from H NMR Signals and Given Formula?

I've always hated NMR questions like this because in real life, if you're not sure of the structure after collecting a protron spectrum, you could always run a DEPT-135 spectrum. You don't have to be all that clever sometimes... Although in this case, it is a rather easy problem.

Safety of chemical experiments at home

Well... I'd have to agree with Thunderfvck on this one... mostly. Here's the thing. It's great that you know basic lab safety procedures, but here are some things to keep in mind. 1. After working with chemicals, the work area should be treated as unclean even after washing it. So if...
