Supersonic Airfoil + Bow Shocks
Homework Statement Hey all, In my Gas dynamics class we need to find the lift and drag coefficients of a supersonic airfoil (diamond shaped) for a range of AoA and Mach numbers. I can easily handle any situation where oblique shocks or Prandtl-Meyer expansions occur, but I'm unsure how to...- Pilgrimman

How important is GRE writing score?
I'm goona assume physics is your discipline... I wouldn't stress too much about those scores... I got a 3.5 as well (PISSED) and virtually identical scores on everything else. My GPA was 3.7 (unlike your 3.92, DAYUM!) and I still got accepted to the Master's program in Aerospace Engineering at...- Pilgrimman

What's the point of this screw?
The hole could very well be a clearance hole. The end of the screw might connect to another part not pictured.- Pilgrimman

Dealing with Low GRE Writing Score for Grad Apps
ZombieFeynman: I appreciate the encouragement. I am applying to quite a few. bcrowell: I'm applying for Aerospace Engineering. I think the GRE is a scam monetarily, not in terms of my score. ETS will charge for the most basic requests (mine is not basic but the fact remains). I don't like my...- Pilgrimman

Dealing with Low GRE Writing Score for Grad Apps
I appreciate the input guys. ZombieFeynman, the percentile associated with a 3.5 is 30% *sob*. Vanadium 50, I agree, but quite honestly I don't have 55 dollars to spend at the moment, especially if it's not guaranteed to improve my score. I will definitely consider it though. The big issues...- Pilgrimman

Dealing with Low GRE Writing Score for Grad Apps
Thanks for the input so far. I would think that I could simply submit a sample of my writing but there does not seem to be a way to do such a thing... I'm really freaking out about this! I hope Number Nine is right... Any further input anybody?- Pilgrimman

Dealing with Low GRE Writing Score for Grad Apps
Hello all, I am working on grad school applications and they ask for GRE scores as expected. Here is the issue: my quantitative and qualitative are 162 and 161 respectively. I am okay with this. I don't know what the hell happened with writing. I got a 3.5. Yes, that low. I can tell you (as...- Pilgrimman

Schools Graduate School Prospects - I have no idea
That I did. I actually had to re-type my whole original post due to a power bump... I guess I forgot the career part. I am interested in working in industry, particularly in the defense industry. I am enthralled by military hardware, etc. My dream company would have to be Lockheed Martin...- Pilgrimman

Thanks so much for the informative reply! I wasn't planning on mentioning anything to do with weapons... That doesn't seem like the wisest thing to say... But thanks for the concern!- Pilgrimman

Schools Graduate School Prospects - I have no idea
Hello all, I, like so many others here, am planning on attending graduate school in the near future (in my case, I graduate next year). I'd like some advice that isn't just what I want to hear, so I figured the internet would be just the place! OVERVIEW: I want to know what "tier" (for...- Pilgrimman

Does max deflection occur at max bending moment?
Keep in mind that the deflection is the second derivative of the bending moment (for simple beam theory). This means that the bending moment need not be maximum for maximum deflection.- Pilgrimman

Computing magnitude and location of resultant parabolic loading
Generate a formula for the parabola as a polynomial. Integrate over the bar. Apply that force at the centroid of the parabola (which can likely be found in the back of your book in a table).- Pilgrimman
