Are Charge Imbalances Present on Resistors?

Thank you, Jano L., for the hyperlink. That document looks like it will answer my questions.

Are Charge Imbalances Present on Resistors?

The reason I am expecting charge imbalance is because of Ohm's Law for points in space: Eσ = J and only two things can ultimately make an electric field--charge imbalances or varying magnetic fields.

Are Charge Imbalances Present on Resistors?

To re-ask the question bluntly, for any given circuit, where can we find out where any and all electrical charge imbalances are physically located? I know how to find many other parameters in circuits (voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, etc.) but I do not feel that I have a...

Confused High-Schooler Seeks Help Understanding Volt

Matterwave is correct. However, I would also like to add that Volts are equivalent to Joules (J) per Coulomb (C). Joules are a unit used to measure energy, and Coulombs are a unit to measure electric charge. And by the way, there are 6.24x1018 protons/electrons per Coulomb.

Are Charge Imbalances Present on Resistors?

Also, how would you relate my question to what gives rise to Poynting vectors? Thinking about this, I think my second figure may be the correct one. But I still need a little more explanation. It isn't all clicking yet. In any case, the following hyperlink made me think this way...

Can Having Enough Bends in Circuit Conductors Cause Energy Loss?

OK. That explanation resolves the question. Thank you!

Can Having Enough Bends in Circuit Conductors Cause Energy Loss?

I am aware that when charged particles accelerate or decelerate, the particle will emit a certain amount of radiation. But since a charged particle will accelerate any time it goes around a bend in a circuit, wouldn't it radiate some energy when it goes around the bend? I thought that giving...

Are Charge Imbalances Present on Resistors?

I know that in electric circuits charge imbalances can build up on capacitor plates, wire bends, and antennas. But is this also the case for a resistor with a voltage applied between its terminals? In other words, which of the following diagrams would be correct? Note that a + stands...

Need Help Finding Data Concerning the Pyrolysis and Smouldering of Materials

Yes, you're right. I got my scales mixed up. 1,740°C would be white-hot, but not 1740°F (950°C). And for your information, I have already visited the website that you mentioned about a week ago! (Although it is nonetheless useful information.)

Lightning Protection Systems: Direct vs Indirect Strokes & EMPs

Again, back to the question of what is meant by "direct" and "indirect" strokes. Davenn conveniently posted a picture two posts back which may help answer my question. Would the "direct stroke" be the thick bolt striking the side of the Washington monument and an "indirect stroke" be the thin...

Physics What options are available for a physics graduate struggling to find a job?

You shoudn't give up after one year of searching for work. I have known quite a few people who have had to search for work a lot longer than that, myself included. I should say that the most important thing to do not to give up, if anything else. Giving up is the ultimate guarantee of...

Need Help Finding Data Concerning the Pyrolysis and Smouldering of Materials

I am having a bit of trouble finding data about the various combustion temperatures (pyrolysis, smouldering, and flaming) temperatures of everyday materials. Here is the data I have collected so far (forgive me if anything is wrong): *Wood/Paper (C6H10O5)x: Pyrolysis Temperature is 233°C...

Lightning Protection Systems: Direct vs Indirect Strokes & EMPs

About two weeks ago, I wanted to find out more about the design of lightning protection systems. In particular, I wanted to figure out what gage of wire would be necessary for linking a lightning rod to earth-ground. What I had learned is that the gage of the wire would have to be extremely...

    Young Engineer wondering about future

I should also mention that I also know that the job market for Mechanical Engineers is considerably better than that for Electrical or Chemical Engineers at the current time, so it looks like you are making the right choice an engineering program. But I would still be wary of work experience...

    Young Engineer wondering about future

I should tell you about something that is not often mentioned to people going into the engineering field. And that is: BEWARE OF PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS. Recent graduates of the engineering field are given little respect in the current job market. I would advise caution in going...
