Admissions DFT & VASP Experience for Graduate Programs in SS Physics

How useful is experience with software like VASP as an undergraduate when applying to graduate programs in solid state physics?I'm not asking if they expect you to know how to use it,but can it come across as something important in the application?

Partition function for ideal gas for "medium" temperature

Looking for the heat capacity of ideal gas due to rotational degrees of freedom. If the temperature of the gas is much higher than the temperature corresponding to the energy differential between states, the partition function can be written as the integral over the density of states. If the...

Can you watch full PhD vivas (physics) online?

No,I'd just like to watch one out of curiosity. I wouldn't think it is hard for people to prepare for these things, right? They have been working on the questions for years, after all!

Can you watch full PhD vivas (physics) online?

I know the public defenses are easily accessible.I'm actually looking for the one on one interviews.Like here:

Can you watch full PhD vivas (physics) online?

Does anyone know of any?I didn't find one which makes me think they don't ever get filmed.

Really appreciate you taking the time to type this out.Thank you.

Courses Should I take General Relativity?

It obviously matters depending on the subject you're applying to grad school for. I'm saying it seems like it doesn't generally matter, say if you are going into atmospheric physics, whether you've taken GR vs quantum optics in undergrad. On second thought,it may have been a silly question.

Courses Should I take General Relativity?

Of course, but I wanted to see what other people would have to say. I'm gathering that it really doesn't matter,so thanks!

Courses Should I take General Relativity?

Basically,I'm between picking sort of "important" general courses for the fun of it like GR,astrophysics, cosmology,in depth nuclear physics, or picking more specialized courses on subjects there is a strong chance I end up going to grad school for like all atmospheric physics courses or solid...

Courses Should I take General Relativity?

It wouldn't be the only reason I'd take the course.I am interested. But if I have to choose between courses I'm equally interested in,then I'll go based on utility. I mentioned that I haven't chosen a field of study for grad school, which is why I am asking such a general question.Sorry if I...

Courses Should I take General Relativity?

I am thinking about taking GR as an elective, but I have no plans on going into cosmology or any related field.I wanted to know if when applying for graduate school, whether it is a positive for them to see you have taken a "high level" course, such as GR. I know that the best thing is to have...

What is the distance and mass of a binary star system with given parameters?

Not really. It is common in this course's problem sets to be given information that isn't part of the solution.I would guess this is common in many places,is it not?

What is the distance and mass of a binary star system with given parameters?

Thanks for replying! Well, according to wikipedia, the mass of a standard G2V star is 1.07 solar masses but I don't think this would be an accepted solution by the examiner since spectral types weren't mentioned in the lecture and there is no spectral type to mass index in the textbook. I might...

What is the distance and mass of a binary star system with given parameters?

Homework Statement In an visual binary star system, the apparent magnitude of the primary star is m=9.8 and its spectrral type is G2V.The angular semi-major axis is φ=0''.1 and the period of the system is 24y.Find the distance of the system r and the two masses. The Sun's absolute magnitude is...
