Why does air have to be compressed first in gas turbines?
So it is all about combustion temperature and heat added to the air?! ...more air = more oxygen = more fuel can be injected = more heat added to the air = air volume increase = expansion of higher volume air produces higher velocities = more work produced right? well, but know that the gas...- Science20

Why does air have to be compressed first in gas turbines?
In all gas turbines air is first compressed using a compressor and then head added in a combustor and finally the hot pressurized air is expanded in nozzles to convert air contained energy to kinetic energy which can be harvested and transferred in the form of thrust or shaft rotation. My...- Science20

Confusion about energy conversion mechanisms in gas turbines
No I am concerned with gas turbines only. This is mind opening. Thank you. So the volume of air greatly increases due to heat gain in the combustor, and when this big volume of air pass through stator nozzles it exits at higher velocity than if it was not heated in the first place. It does make...- Science20

Confusion about energy conversion mechanisms in gas turbines
Well, I guess non combustion air is heat exchanged with combustion gases so that the temperature of the air at turbine inlet is very high. But why?- Science20

Confusion about energy conversion mechanisms in gas turbines
Hello Gents, I am very confused about the working principle of gas turbines. I understand that air is first compressed in a compressor to obtain high pressure air at the inlet of turbine, but before air is introduced to the turbine, first it has to be heated to very high temperatures through...- Science20

How pressure increases in centrifugal compressor?
I have read this in my textbook about principles of operation of centrifugal compressor: "The impeller is rotated at high speed by the turbine and air is continuously induced into the center of the impeller. Centrifugal action causes it to flow radially outwards along the vanes to the impeller...- Science20
