Courses Ready for Calculus-based Physics?
I'm considering taking calculus based physics in the spring. The first course (mechanics) has a prerequisite of Calculus 1 and a co-requisite of Calculus 2. The 2nd course (electricity/magnetism) has Calculus 2 as a prerequisite. I just took Calculus 1 this semester and got a high A and I plan...- ScienceMan

Undergrad Should I get a new graphing calculator?
So I have a TI-84 Plus Silver edition that I've had for 10 years. It's kind of beat up but it works perfectly fine. I know the model has been discontinued in favor of a newer one, and I've already encountered a feature it lacks due to its age (it was something in an introductory stats course, I...- ScienceMan

Finding the Derivative of y=sqrt(x+sqrt(x+sqrt(x)))
I figure I should post the end result of this. I ended up asking my instructor and the problem was I needed to move some parentheses around. I guess I messed those up somehow and it ended up screwing up the answer somehow. Thanks for the help everyone.- ScienceMan

Finding the Derivative of y=sqrt(x+sqrt(x+sqrt(x)))
I'm submitting exactly what I put in for the answer I got. I know formatting isn't the problem, since it would tell me if it was (I'm using WebWorks in case that matters.) I did check it against Wolfram Alpha, and you can see the result here. As far as I can tell the results are the same, but I...- ScienceMan

Finding the Derivative of y=sqrt(x+sqrt(x+sqrt(x)))
Homework Statement This is a chain rule problem that I can't seem to get right no matter what I do. It wants me to find the derivative of y=sqrt(x+sqrt(x+sqrt(x))) Homework Equations dy/dx=(dy/du)*(du/dx) d/dx sqrtx=1/(2sqrtx) d/dx x=1 (f(x)+g(x))'=f'(x)+g'(x) The Attempt at a Solution My...- ScienceMan

Courses Trig Identities: How to Ace Calc II Without Memorizing Every Identity
I was wondering exactly what parts of trig I need to do to do well in Calc II. I took trig this past spring and aced it and I'm taking Calc I this semester. I'm not worried about this semester because I know my instructor won't use trig outside teaching us how to take the derivatives of the trig...- ScienceMan

Calculus Good textbooks for really learning calculus?
I'm looking to be a statistician, so I don't know what that falls under. In any case the grad program I want to get into requires real analysis and a lot of other upper division math so I'll have to figure out how to deal with proofs at some point. I'm taking calculus because I need to be able...- ScienceMan

Calculus Good textbooks for really learning calculus?
I'm going to take Calc I in the fall and Calc II and III later on and I want to actually understand the stuff intuitively instead of just trying to memorize formulas and then having trouble with the applications, like optimization. I have James Stewart's Essential Calculus Early Transcendentals...- ScienceMan

Courses How much trigonometry is used in high level math?
Hi all. I'm a liberal arts graduate looking to enter a statistics masters program (in case it matters). I'm retaking some lower level courses to prove I can do math I wanted to know how much trig is used in Calc II and beyond. I didn't do great in that class (I'm going to retake it) and when I...- ScienceMan

Calculating sunrise/sunset times
I'm not sure if this is in the right forum but I assume someone in charge can move move it if it's not. Anyway, is there an equation or algorithm or something I can use to calculate the sunrise/sunset times at a given latitude/longitude on a given day of the year (or possibly something that...- ScienceMan

High School Time Travel & Theory of Relativity for HS Students
Hey guys I have an issue I was wondering if you could help me with. There was a book in my high school library about the theory of relativity and time travel. I'm trying to find it again but the fact that I don't have a title for it is making things difficult. (For the record I'm long graduated...- ScienceMan
