Adjusting and Measuring RPM On Lawn Mower Engine

Do you have a multimeter with a frequency counter? Many have that function. Hold one lead near the spark plug wire and you will likely get enough induced voltage to get a frequency reading. I'm not sure if mowers use a lost spark or not (ie one spark per crank rotation or one every other...

Understanding Automotive Differentials: How Do They Work?

I couldn't follow your written description (it wasn't that easy to read the photo) and I wasn't sure if we were saying the same thing. Either way, if what I just posted is in line with what you were thinking all is clear.

Understanding Automotive Differentials: How Do They Work?

I think you are close to getting it but perhaps not quite. In the picture the red arrow is the force the crown gear and diff housing applies to the spider gear. The two green arrows are the forces applied to the spider gear by the two axle drive gears (the bevel gears). The orange arrow...

Understanding Automotive Differentials: How Do They Work?

They aren't really rotating as one. Think of it as balanced. A seesaw with two 30kg kids is balanced but that doesn't mean the thing can't pivot. The only way it stays balanced is if the load on each side is equal. Take a look at the video Tea Jay posted. Notice the part where he attached...

Automotive Where is the Single Spring Located in the Indy Car's Rear Suspension?

Popular Mechanics? Oh, sorry I see, no I was talking about asking the Apexspeed guys, not PM. I can see how that wasn't clear in the post but that is what I meant.

Automotive Where is the Single Spring Located in the Indy Car's Rear Suspension?

You might ask some of the guys over there. Many did build their cars in garages at home. Not all but many. Many would have good ideas how to make an easier to weld frame.

Automotive Where is the Single Spring Located in the Indy Car's Rear Suspension?

It appears the question was answered but as a general tip, the guys on the Apexspeed forum can be very good when it comes to these sort of questions. Apexspeed is a forum specifically talking about open wheel, amateur formula cars. There are several members there who have built their own cars...

Automotive Where is the Single Spring Located in the Indy Car's Rear Suspension?

I see no reason why pushrods and bell cranks can't work just fine for the street. A number of road cars use the setup. It's not common because it's expensive and the aero benefits are rather limited in a car with fenders. It also doesn't always package that well.

Automotive Where is the Single Spring Located in the Indy Car's Rear Suspension?

You want to do a mono-shock design? Do you mean a sliding shuttle design as was used on some cars in the 90s? In general, unless you are racing a FV you probably don't want to do a mono spring setup. Perhaps some more information is needed here.

Understanding Automotive Differentials: How Do They Work?

If I understand the question correctly, you are OK with the idea that the left and right axle torque is the same. But I think you are confusing something I have said. I think the confusion is the statement that the sum of the left and right torque is that of the crown gear. So if the engine...

Understanding Automotive Differentials: How Do They Work?

Basically yes. Aside from wear, the open diff plus computer controlled brakes is theoretically a better system even though many of the car people shudder at the idea. However, here's why it's good. The open diff always splits the torque. That means at any point in time we can send half the...

Understanding Automotive Differentials: How Do They Work?

I really haven't thought it out enough to say. It doesn't aid traction in that it doesn't increase the tractive force a tire can apply via the ground. For example with the open diff and one tire on ice, the other tire has good traction but no torque with which to use the traction. What the...

Understanding Automotive Differentials: How Do They Work?

Please forgive me for bringing back this thread. This is actually one of the better diff discussions I've seen and thought I would add a bit. I apologize because not all of this is in order. First, a bit about the open diff. Someone included a link to the old GM video on the open diff...
