How Many Covalent Bonds Can These Elements Form?
Homework Statement Determine the number of covalent bonds that are possible for atoms of the following elements: silicon, bromine, nitrogen, sulphur and neonThe Attempt at a Solution OK so I know that you can find the number of possible covalent bonds by considering the electron configuration...- Soilwork

Bonding of HCL and HF: Why Higher Boiling Temp for HF?
Well I've been doing some reading and I think I might have it, but I'm not entirely sure. From the looks of it there are the intramolecular bonding forces and the intermolecular bonding forces. So the intramolecular forces are polar covalent because they are responsible for the bonding of the H...- Soilwork

Bonding of HCL and HF: Why Higher Boiling Temp for HF?
Homework Statement Explain why hydrogen fluoride (HF) has a higher boiling temperature than hydrogen chloride (HCL) even though HF has a lower molecular weight. Attempt OK so from the looks of it I think that the bonding that bonds the H to the Cl and the H to the F is polar covalent. So...- Soilwork

Scientist Arrogance: Learning vs. Working Engineer
I'm not sure I quite follow this, but I thought that for any postgrad studies you essentially have to attend uni like a full-time job. This means that you can't really have a part-time job to help pay expenses. So where is your money supposed to come from? Although I have to say kudos to...- Soilwork

Cats or Dogs: Which Pet Reigns Supreme?
I go for dogs. They're always fun to have around and they are a lot more affectionate than any cat I've ever had. They're so much easier to train than cats as well. I also can't abide the cat piss smell. Even when you get a cat to piss outside the smell hangs around in the garden. Cats are...- Soilwork

Uncovering the Mystery of A in Lattice Energy Equation
I have found out what that term is...finally. It is apparently called the Born-Mayer potential. I get that to find the constant A you need set dE/dr = 0 and solve for A. This is all fine and I can easily express A analytically, but I cannot obtain a numerical result because I'm not so...- Soilwork

Is Kicking Below the Belt an Acceptable Form of Self-Defense for Men?
I disagree to a certain extent with the fact that if you are big it will prevent others from wanting to fight you. From what I've seen if there is a group of **** stirrers then they will be attracted to the big guy by himself instead of the weedy guy. I know that this sometimes isn't the...- Soilwork

Uncovering the Mystery of A in Lattice Energy Equation
I've just come across a problem and the equation within this problem isn't entirely explained in the text. I've searched on the net for this same 'lattice energy' equation, but there have been no results. Here is the equation: E = Aexp^ \frac{-r} { \alpha} - \frac{Me^2} {4 \pi \epsilon_0 r}...- Soilwork

Is Kicking Below the Belt an Acceptable Form of Self-Defense for Men?
If the guy is the same size as you then no it isn't OK. If the guy is the same size as you and is about to kill you then you do whatever the hell you want to get out of that situation. Then of course if the person is a lot bigger than you or you are just outnumbered then anything...- Soilwork

Why Is English the Only Compulsory Subject in Years 11 and 12 in Australia?
I think that you (Moonbear) slightly misinterpreted what the original poster was saying. He knows that his English isn't great and that was his complaint. In most schools in Australia you are taught crappy analytical writing of texts and Australian soapies without any emphasis on how to write...- Soilwork

Why Is English the Only Compulsory Subject in Years 11 and 12 in Australia?
There is absolutely no purpose for teaching English anymore as the syllabus stands right now. To pick out symbolic meaning that is speculative and might not have even been intended by the author himself/herself is irrelevant and plain rubbish. There is absolutely no penalty for bad spelling and...- Soilwork

Searching for Visyar Bright Star Catalogue: Help Needed!
Thanks for suggesting that. I will give it a go and see if it works. As of now though I'm having huge trouble finding ~10 V. magnitude stars using the star maps and because the telescope isn't reliable in pointing absolutely accurately, the stars never appear in the FOV of the camera. Another...- Soilwork

Searching for Visyar Bright Star Catalogue: Help Needed!
Thank You! That is indeed it. Now I can just hope that this 'star-hopping' method using nearby bright stars will help me in identifying fainter stars using star maps. Really appreciate your help- Soilwork

Searching for Visyar Bright Star Catalogue: Help Needed!
I'm wanting to look at a bright star catalogue and I've been told to use something pronounced as visy-ar. I've typed 'visear', 'visiar' and some other spellings in google and can't find the site. Does anyone know the link at all and how the name of this database is actually spelled?- Soilwork
