How Does Charge Distribution Affect Potential in Electromagnetic Fields?
Homework Statement A hoop of radius R and total charge -q is oriented with its normal vector along the z-axis. A positive charge +q is placed at the centre of the hoop. The potential at a distance r along the z-axis is: V(r) = (\frac{q}{4\pi\epsilon_0}(\frac{1}{r} - \frac{1}{\sqrt{r^2 +...- solipsis

Consciousness and Reincarnation: A Scientific Perspective
Sorry, forgot about that, I guess the real question then is what "ceasing to exist" actually is. Sounds pretty boring, actually...oh well, at least I may get to be a supernova one day- solipsis

Consciousness and Reincarnation: A Scientific Perspective
That's true, I didn't think of that...I guess the only thing that we can conclude is that we still exist, just in a different form(s). What that experience would be like is the real question - or is an 'experience' exclusively human? I dunno...it's starting to hurt my brain :-p- solipsis

Consciousness and Reincarnation: A Scientific Perspective
Ah yes, good point. Though my idea is that your constituents may find themselves in another living organism or person, and if the latter is the case, could you "be" that person, somehow? Seems a bit...unlikely, but I guess the same can be said about our current existence- solipsis

Sorry for the double post, but by 'we' I mean humans...replace 'we' with 'I' if it makes more sense :-p- solipsis

Consciousness and Reincarnation: A Scientific Perspective
What I mean is that before a person is born (or conceived), they obviously do not exist in the same form they do during their life. However, they still exist, it's just that the atoms and molecules that will make up the person are "spread out" before they are born, and may even be the...- solipsis

Consciousness and Reincarnation: A Scientific Perspective
If I had no consciousness before I was born, and I have consciousness now, does this imply that a state of consciousness can possibly arise from a state of unconsciousness? If yes, does this mean that when we die (and lose consciousness) we can regain consciousness at some point in the...- solipsis

Courses Which course should I do to study advanced nanotechnology?
Sorry for the double post, but I just thought I'd mention that my uni offers training courses in microscopy (SEM, TEM, SPM etc), so the unit I'm studying (and thinking about dropping) is really just the theory behind it. Basically if I withdraw from nanotech I can learn about microscopy, which...- solipsis

Courses Which course should I do to study advanced nanotechnology?
Which course should I do to study "advanced" nanotechnology? Hi, By "advanced" I mean futuristic concepts like nanorobotics, micro/nano electromechanical systems, programmable matter, metamaterials, etc.. Right now I am studying nanotechnology as part of the BSc (Uni of Western Australia)...- solipsis

Having second thoughts about my course
I don't feel that the nanotechnology course at my uni is teaching me the right knowledge and skills to make a career out of those advanced, futuristic concepts - rather the course seems to be more focused on the chemistry/materials engineering side of things. So I thought that I should study...- solipsis

Having second thoughts about my course
Thanks for the replies. But what I am really asking is if it's wise to withdraw from nanotech, given that it's a new technology that's most likely to become huge. However, the units I am studying this semester don't have much to do with nanotechnology itself (one is a chemistry lab safety and...- solipsis

Having second thoughts about my course
Ok, I have until August 31 to withdraw from the nanotech units, but still I'm having a hard time making up my mind - nanotech has so much potential, however it still being in its early stages, and the fact that the course isn't very detailed at my uni, deters me from it for the time being. So...- solipsis

Having second thoughts about my course
Hey everyone, As the name of the thread suggests, I'm having second thoughts about my BSc degree. I'm studying a nanotechnology course, and yeah i know that probably sounds cool, but what deters me is the fact that it's my second year, i have 2 nanotech units, and neither of them have...- solipsis
