Graduate Could gravity be the key to teleportation and understanding black holes?
are you proposing we turn people into photons and gravitons, send them off to wherever, and then change them back into people? in anycase... like phlog said gravity isn't instantaneous, in fact you can't send information between two point instantaneously according to special relativity... I am...- SpitfireAce

Programs During your spar time as physics majors
well, during the year I try to read the textbooks, and occasionally pop sci books... last summer I read Feynman's lectures on physics, I'm doing research with my professor this summer, but I can't figure out what I want to work on, I am reading a Q and A style book (flying circus of physics)...- SpitfireAce

Fun Brain Games to Kill Time When You're Bored
that first idea is so ingenious and practical, thanks a lot =) the second thing sounds tricky... maybe if you had a fixed marker, i.e. you look at a tower in the distance, right above it is the sun, if you move a few paces to the right and look again, you'll see that the tower is now some...- SpitfireAce

A rod, a ball, garvitational Potential Energy (U), and the power series expns.
I guess you want to integrate over the length of the rod and end up with the integral of (1/l+1) dl from 0 to L... that should give you ln(x+1) U= -GmM/L [integral 0 to L (dl /sqrt. of x^2+l^2)] and I guess you can say that the square root of x^2+l^2 is x+C where C is some constant...- SpitfireAce

Finding Solace in Favourite Quotes: Escaping Despair with Words of Wisdom
Why is it that Physicists always always require so much expensive equipment? Now the Department of Mathematics requires nothing but money for papers, pencils, and waste paper baskets and the Department of Philosophy is better still. It doesn't even ask for waste paper baskets. -University...- SpitfireAce

Top Non-Mathematical Physics Books Every Enthusiast Should Read
"Btw, does anybody know of a book which has tried to explain the whole physics conceptually from the most basic fundamental pov?" nah, the road to reality is tough and mathy, not really conceptual... I would say Feynman's lectures on physics, though niether of these are "cant put down" books...- SpitfireAce

Freakiest things in our solar system
the asteroid belt was thought to be created by a planet being obliterated by a huge collision, I think we have simulations that show that a certain type of glancing collision (and then a second one upon return) would cause the formation of one moon about the size of ours, the core being hot is...- SpitfireAce

Schools Tell me about how grad schools look at grades
uhhh, so what do grad schools want? I am still not sure anyone addressed this beyond reassuring him that his grades are ok... so from what you said I gather they only care about gpa... and if those A+'s were in English it wouldn't make a difference... what else? Is extracurricular stuff still...- SpitfireAce
