Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics
Here are a set of lecture notes from UT-Asutin which condense main points of the Reif textbook. I know that it may not be completely helpful for problem-solving, but it is beneficial for review. http://farside.ph.utexas.edu/teaching/sm1/lectures.html- sr6622

How Many States Exist Between E and E+δE in a Spin 1/2 System?
Think about the possible number of states that exist between E and delta E. Like your drunken sailor problem, in which different ways could they move? How is that similar to your particles? Could you use a common formula for this situation as you might have used in the drunken sailor?- sr6622

What is Preventing Me From Being the Best?
I don't think you should worry about your classmates that much. As others have said, try to be more focused on getting something meaningful from your courses more than anything else. Although high schools don't really foster that nowadays, it is important that you go beyond just a grade. Also...- sr6622

Schools Summer REU programs - question about chances for people from small schools
I just have a few questions about the process. Did you guys tend to do REUs that were similar to research that you might have been doing at your home university? I think I would like to do materials science research that is similar to what I am doing right now. Does it help to have to have some...- sr6622

Just wondering here... but did you take the Physics GRE also? I would assume several people have 800s on the quant. section of the general GRE at those high-end institutions.- sr6622

Schools Summer REU programs - question about chances for people from small schools
Hey guys. I'm a currently a junior physics major at a state school in the south. It's not known for physics in any way. My question is how difficult is it to get into a Physics/Materials Science REU program? My school does not have many research opportunities in physics, though the department...- sr6622

What is the constant a for the solution y(x) = e^{ax} in the equation x = x?
I'm confused. Can't you just make a characteristic equation and make the equation r^2 - 1 = 0, and then solve for r? Yielding simply 1 and -1? I haven't done this in a while, sorry.- sr6622

How Do You Determine Your Proficiency in a Subject Beyond Grades?
This is just a general question. I'm currently a Physics major in my first year. I'm taking Medical Physics this semester and have done Physics I, II, III (Modern). Anyway, my question is really how do you know when you're actually good at a give subject or course? You can solve problems very...- sr6622

REU Programs and General Physics Questions from a Freshman
Hey guys, I just have a couple of questions. I am currently a freshman at a small state school. First off, I was wondering what level of mathematics and physics is sufficient to do an REU summer program. I've emailed a few programs, and they have constantly stated that there are no specific...- sr6622
