Undergrad How Do You Multiply Total Differentials?
Dear All, I am unable to understand a simple mathematics relation. I spent 2-3 hours to Google multi-variable mathematics and have studied some concepts, still i am missing/confusing some basics. The problem I have at hand is following. Vector p can be written as p = (p1, p2, p3) = n(sin θ3...- taimoortalpur

Graduate Reverse calculation of radius and principal planes of thick lens
Dear All, I need you kind support in a problem, which I am unable to figure out. It is regarding thick lens. I am determining lens principal planes and radius using shaping factor and focal length. The forward problem I am using is, Focal length 1/f = (n-1)*[1/r1 - 1/r2...- taimoortalpur

Graduate Goos hänchen shift and phase shift
Dear All, I am confusing total internal reflection for a light wave traveling from denser medium to lower dense medium. I know we get lateral shift i.e. goos hänchen shift with total internal reflection, but Do we have phase shift due to goos hänchen shift with total internal reflection...- taimoortalpur

Graduate Constant in Modes of Optical Fiber
Many thanks for your humble reply. I used the Normalization constant calculated for step index fiber LP11 mode (shown in figure) but the values are in range of 10^6 and later i use them for measuring smthng and get erronous results...Kindly inform me are there any formulas for LP01 and LP11...- taimoortalpur

Graduate Constant in Modes of Optical Fiber
Dear All, Many thanks for reading this query. Actually, I am having problem in measuring the mode fields of Optical fiber at the core-cladding interface analytically for modes LP01 and LP11. The modes are normally given by eq 2.165 (image attached). To my knowledge these constants A and C...- taimoortalpur

Graduate Effect of apperture diffraction and fourier plane
Dear All, I appreciate the efforts and support of members/admin here toward the goodness of education. I am confusing a few concepts regarding diffraction, kindly help me out. I came up with following questions, 1. Is apperture required for diffraction or any finite wave will diffract...- taimoortalpur

Graduate Understanding Normal Modes of Light Propagation in Anisotropic Crystals
Many Thanks For your humble reply. I understood the normal modes in physical medium and i am curious how they relate to normal modes of light propagation in anisotropic crystals. The normal modes travel along principle axes for anisotropic case. Why along the principle axis?? and i am not sure...- taimoortalpur
