Engineering Technician getting an Engineering degree -- Will my work experience transfer?

Very true. It also depends on the position for which you interview, how well you sell yourself, the job market at the time. Having a new BS in Engineering + actual technician experience is valuable. Presented correctly to future employers, you may find it advantageous & lucrative. Then there...

Astronomy Projects for 12th Grade Class

Show pictures of island galaxies like Magellan, then pictures of violently merging galaxies with all of the swirls and tails and erupting star-forming regions of blue stars. Send them on a mission to explain why merging galaxies are so dynamic, explore the interactions of distributed masses...

Physics videos to popularize physics - any good ideas?

Years ago, before YouTube, I recall a television show (perhaps the American news show 60 Minutes?) that had a couple of innovative High School physics/science teachers doing cool stuff. Two experiments that I remember: Take all students to the parking lot. Put a vehicle, in neutral gear, set...

How to wall mount a detachable shelf rack for computer

I meant the TAPCON masonry screws, not the little plastic sleeves. I always assumed the TAPCONs are usually a little stronger material to survive the torque into the masonry. They would also survive more shear load. As old Jim said, a masonry bit usually comes in the pack of screws.

How to wall mount a detachable shelf rack for computer

Anchor wood furring strips to the masonry wall. Use the blue concrete/masonry anchors found at the home store. Be sure to set the screws into the mortar joints, not the cinder blocks themselves. Use of furring strips will help distribute the load and give you something easier to screw-mount...

Looking for a Gearmotor; How Much Torque to Close this door?

Much more info needed for any kind of intelligent answer: This figure is plan (top) view, correct? If not, specify it so the community can determine the direction of the gravity vector. Gravity may add force requirements. Is the door hinged? If hinged, where is the hinge? Specify it. If no...

Engineering Can an Experienced Electrician Become an EET in Just 3 Years?

It is not clear from the discussion but I assume you are considering a 4-year BSEET and not a 2-year AS EET degree. My advice is to make the attempt to pursue the EET. Ultimately, it will refine some of your knowledge and perhaps open doors that are now welded shut without some type of degree.

Is Lack of Proper Safety Policies Putting Physics Lab Students at Risk?

I've had to wrap up the semester and grade/post finals, now I can get back to answering questions. I appreciate the mostly positive feedback from the community here. My small university is a relatively young school. Like most young organizations, the Administration is learning how to grow out...

Is Lack of Proper Safety Policies Putting Physics Lab Students at Risk?

I came to Academia after 30 years in engineering industry. During that time I implemented rigorous safety policies at two different companies. In one company we had the highest injury incidence rate in the entire 30K employee company, the entire planet. We were told to fix it, or they'll...

    What is a carousel? (Mechatronics)

"Carousel" also applies to material handling equipment. One variant of the design is a series of hanging multi-tier storage racks set on a motorized overhead track conveyor. It provides high-density material storage with a single access point.

Automotive Why do tires slip easier from a standstill start?

Lots of interesting comments. I am not a vehicle dynamicist, so correct me if I am wrong. What is NOT being discussed are the concepts of attempting to accelerate the inertia of the vehicle and the associated change in momentum of the vehicle. The engine + transmission + drive train supplies...

My friend's son thinks his professor hates him

Is it only the Professor who could be "difficult" in this situation? The entire story is not up for discussion I think. I'm encountering many students of the younger generations ("millenials", and not only those but others, too) who don't seem to understand the concept of diplomacy, protocols...

Courses Is Constant Leap-Frogging Through a Text Normal?

As an engineering instructor, I personally think the flow of the course through the selected text should be approximately sequential through the chapters. It is not always possible to do this because of how the selected text might be laid out by the author. Instructors can't help that...

What is the Best Method for Calculating Rolling Resistance in Train Carriage?

Unless I didn't see it, you seem to have missed the most important part: time required to accelerate to speed. Websearch for Smart Motion Cheat Sheet, is a nice summary of equations of motion. Other nice sources are gear motor Engineering Guides from a variety of manufacturers. You need to...

Engineering Advice for an entry level EE facing problems

His behavior sounds like he's disgruntled and withholding any support. You want to make sure the problem isn't YOU, also. If at any time you acted like a hot shot know-it-all new graduate, he'd probably behave that way.
