Medical Mozart does not make you smarter
Which is one of the reasons (along with fatigue) that comprehensive performance evaluations are often scheduled over a period of days. You might be in a better mood one day than the next. I once endured a battery of assessment tests that lasted for eight hours over a two day period. I wish it...- Type 7

Should Donors Dictate University Curriculums?
Your experience is irrelevant. You evidently don't understand how cash-strapped most schools are. They do not receive 'large amounts of free equipment.' They do not have the option of refusing one donation and accepting funds from another source. There is no other source. Without that donor...- Type 7

Should Donors Dictate University Curriculums?
I saw an article about a new trend in education philanthropy. Some donors, corporate and individual, are no longer satisfied with a school or building being named after them. They now want the university to agree to teach specific courses with specific content and objectives. Some examples: -...- Type 7

Archimedes Manuscript - The Palimpsest
The articles on the Palimpsest that I've read have mentioned that were it not for the reuse of these parchments it's likely the original works would have been lost forever. By preserving these recycled prayer books, the Christian monks preserved the ancient manuscripts as well, however unwittingly.- Type 7

Grapefruit Sized Hail in Midwest - Weather Forecast
It happened at about 4:00am. I awoke with a vague awareness of having heard a loud BOOM ZAP. I smelled smoke, ran out to the living room, turned on a light and saw my TV smoking like a chimney. I took it outside so it wouldn't set off the smoke detector. It just now occurred to me that...- Type 7

Grapefruit Sized Hail in Midwest - Weather Forecast
I can relate. A few weeks ago a power surge of some sort (maybe lightning, I was asleep) took out every appliance I had except my computer which was unplugged (because lightning killed my last one). I decided not to replace my TV and to spend more time reading and on the internet. I had TV...- Type 7

History Fascinating Women in History: Who are the Most Inspiring?
Boudicca was one bad ass broad! I'd vote for her for president. She could pinch the head off of Hilary, or any other politician for that matter. From wiki "she was possessed of greater intelligence than often belongs to women, she was tall, had long red hair down to her hips, a harsh voice...- Type 7

History Fascinating Women in History: Who are the Most Inspiring?
I have shied away from Procopius because so many commentators have described his treatment of Theodora as 'prejudiced' and even 'pornographic.' At first I was trying to avoid being prejudiced by it, but then I kinda fell for Theodora and found myself despising Procopius. That's a confession on...- Type 7

History Fascinating Women in History: Who are the Most Inspiring?
I had completely forgotten about Hildegard. Thank you for reminding me and for posting the links. I knew of her from her music but I did not know about her literary accomplishments. I had trouble with the boxnet and wiki audio files, evidently the fault of my system, but I found another page...- Type 7

History Fascinating Women in History: Who are the Most Inspiring?
I was hoping we would hear from you. Hypatia is exactly the kind of fascinating woman I had in mind. I would love to have sat in on one of her lectures that she had in her home, an intimate gathering of Alexandria's best and brightest. Wow, that must have been great! In the current issue...- Type 7

News Railway tunnel across Bering Strait
That's an interesting link. All the post-cold war activity there is disconcerting. This might not be the right thread for a discussion on this, but it almost seems like Putin and whatever other powers-that-be are in Russia have decided that they aren't going to be able to compete economically in...- Type 7

Fish in Aquarium: Environmental Awareness and Perception
I think this is an example of people believing what they want to believe to salve their consciences. It's okay to confine a fish to a bowl if it has no awareness that it is so confined. Here's another one I've heard: It's okay to hook fish because they do not feel pain. And as for mammals, it's...- Type 7

Fish in Aquarium: Environmental Awareness and Perception
I'm glad you said 'occurs repeatedly' because I remember when I was a child I lived near a lake and an old man (probably old as I am now) used to feed the fish from his dock every day at the same time. The fish would gather together in the same spot at the correct time each day. Maybe that's memory.- Type 7

News Railway tunnel across Bering Strait
$65 million? That seems way low. The Chunnel cost $15 to $21 billion (depending on source). Shipping is cheaper and not a national defense issue. Edit: Doh! Johnny on the Spot beat me, and with better info!- Type 7
