Undergrad Solving Pell's Equation: I'm Stuck!
I want to solve this equation x^2 - 18 y^2 = 12 Any suggestion? I thought , we have to find \sqrt 18and then find x/y BUT I was confused and then stopped solving- wii

Graduate Proving Closure of X/Y in Normed Spaces
|| x+Y|| = \inf _{y\in Y} ||x+y|| where ||x+y|| is the norm that defines on X. I've already proved that ||x+Y|| defines a norm on X/Y. Thanx in advance. -

Graduate Proving Closure of X/Y in Normed Spaces
I have an idea but I'm not sure if it is right or wrong : Let [x_n] be a Cauchy sequence in X/Y where [x_n]=\{x_n + y | y \in Y\} that means the norm of [x_n] , [x_m] in this sequence is less than \epsilon for each m, n > N so we want to use completeness of X, but how? If... -

Graduate Proving Closure of X/Y in Normed Spaces
Hi there, Could you please help me in how to prove the following : If Y is a closed linear subspace of a normed space X, then if X is complete ==> X/Y is complete. Cheers, W. -

Graduate Solve Geodesic Problem for f:[a,b] to R
If f:[a,b] \to R is a positive real function and\gamma(u,v) = ( f(u)\cos (v), f(u) \sin (v), u) then show that \gamma(t) = \sigma(u(t), c) is a geodesic in Mwhere c is a constant between 0 and2\pi and M=\sigma(U) where U= \{ (u,v)| a<u<b and 0<v< 2\pi \} Actually , I tried to calculate the...- wii

Graduate Troubleshooting Lie Brocket Connection Issues
If f(x) is a positive function and /sigma(u,v) /eq(f(u)cos(v),f(u)sin (v),u) then /gamma(t) = /sigma(u(t),c) is a geodesic where c is constant between 0 and /pi that was the question and I tried to calculate the second derivative of /sigma but that did not work and we still have u in...- wii

Graduate Troubleshooting Lie Brocket Connection Issues
Hello ! Actually I check all the properties of the connection and I can not find out any different and I give up =| any way, let's ignore it :\ I have another question =) If we want to prove that V(t) is a geodesic of 6(u,v) OK? So, I try to prove that by the fact " V(t) is...- wii
