Is the Universe Running Out of Atoms?

What about the proton's life time? I read that some particles have a lifetime (forgive me that is a very loose use of the word there) allow me to associate the word lifetime as the time until what we know the particle as currently to change into something else. Like a neutron, that has a very...

What Causes the Observer Effect in Wave-Particle Duality?

The square of the wavefunction gives the electron a probability of appearing anywhere on the screen. Perhaps i was wrong in saying that it has a "wave of probability" that is a physical entity, but there is certainly an element of probability associated with an electron when traveling throught...

What Causes the Observer Effect in Wave-Particle Duality?

I was led to believe that the electron has with it an associated wave of probability. And it is this that passes through the slits. Thus there is a "quantum jump" (Ref - The New Quantum Universe. Hey & Walters, Cambridge university) after the slits, whereby the electrons' function of probability...

Traveling Electrons: Time to Jump Orbits?

I don't think one can visualise this in terms of how long it takes to jump an energy level. An electron can never be determined to be in one place with any degree of accuracy, and thus we can't measure how long it takes to get to another place. This is of course if you think it physically...

Elastic Properties of a rubber band

Im affraid not. Its a bit cheeky really as we were given a bog standard band that could have come from anywhere really. I think given a higher quality material, the experiment might have produced better results, but such is life i suppose.

Elastic Properties of a rubber band

It is repeatable easily enough. But these are the best readings recorded yet, according to others that have done the same experiment. The band only conforms to hookean behaviour when at small strains. You'll notice that the graph goes up to a strain of 2, that is way beyond where hooks law holds...

Elastic Properties of a rubber band

Does anyone else know what these stages mean? Id really aprpeciate any help people can offer. Woody

Elastic Properties of a rubber band

I am not measuring the cross section during the experiment, only when the band is relaxed. I am simply measuring the force for different extensions. Hence i am puzzled by the decrease in gradient for the middle stage.

Elastic Properties of a rubber band

What you are saying i understand, But it seems that my experiment is showing otherwise. I am plotting stress on the Y axis and Strain on the X axis. Stress is force over area (in this case, the cross section of the band) So in the Second section, as the gradient is less than that of the Hookean...

Elastic Properties of a rubber band

Hi all. I have something of a problem in my understanding of a current lab experiment that I am doing in my second year. The experiment is set such that we explore the elastic properties of an elastic band through small and large deformations and measure the force that it exerts on the...

Mac vs Intel: What's Your Preference?

That's because its a P4  Oh and Chi Meson, Forgive me if i sounded short, I had a rough night that night, as i went to A&E after drinking too much :blushing: :blushing: No hard feeling :) Woodsy

Physics Marathon: 7 Hours of Classes & Lab Straight Tomorrow!

See perhaps I am wierd, but i kinda like labs. Have 6 hours worth of labs to do on thursday. I don't think it is fair though that you have no time to relax and eat, that's not on really. Specially as I am sure you won't be allowed to eat in a lab...

What's the Difference Between Light and Magnetic Fields?

Wave-Partical duality is an interesting aspect of learning about EM waves. The problem is that there is solid evidence for both cases ie that light is either packets of energy (photons) as they give rise to the photo electric effect, and their trajectory can be changed by very strong...

Mac vs Intel: What's Your Preference?

Sorry but there was no word of a lie in what i said. It is a known fault with OSX that has happened on more than one ocasion and our staff know about it.

That thing must get through a serious amount of carrots!
