Engineering Taking on 120k of debt for engineering school EE or Aero worth it?

Taking financial risk? No. More like you will ruin your life. Don't do it man. Learn engineering on your own, study it, invent products, etc. There are resources online to study the same material that any engineer studies for FREE. If you really want to get a full experience, shell out some...

Old Forgotten Classics: Uncover Mind-Blowing Insights & Quality

I would like to start a thread in which we would post books and notable articles/papers by great physicists/mathematicians/scientists of the past. These could be books that you found useful for study or general education. Likewise, seminal papers and other sources are welcome. We are...

Programs Is my degree valuable? Question for People with degrees already

Degree by itself is worthless. Worry not about a degree but the skills you have. I will never forget my favorite martial arts coach respond to the visitor's question of "so, how much does it take to get a black belt?" by pulling his own off and saying to the guy "just for you, special deal - 5...

Physics - EE - Audio Engineering

And lastly, my school has neither EE program nor any EE courses. That is really what drove the question in the first place. If I could take courses formally, I would probably have done it by now without asking here.

Physics - EE - Audio Engineering

Hello, I am a physics undergrad currently applying to grad schools in physics with primary interests in experimental AMO and condensed matter. However, I also have some interest in areas of EE. Specifically, those are the areas of close proximity to condensed matter physics and DSP(digital...

Future Job Market: Engineers & Computer Scientists: Debate & Solutions

It's hard to make predictions. Especially when they are about the future.

    Analytic Solutions to Schroedinger Equation

Everyone knows that the above equation cannot be solved for anything, with the exception of some simple cases(infinite well, harmonic oscillator, hydrogenic atoms, etc). Now, my question is whether we know that it is impossible to solve such differential equation for other potential energy...

Proving That Even Potential Leads to Even or Odd Wavefunction

Or is the idea simply that if we had some arbitrary solution psi(x) and an even potential, then, if needed, we can always make up a symmetric or antisymmetric solution out of that wavefunction? Then, that superposition is either even or odd and still remains a solution.

Proving That Even Potential Leads to Even or Odd Wavefunction

I believe I understand what you wrote. However, the problem states that "the psi(x) can be taken to be either even or odd." Clearly, if you wanted to make a linear superposition of (anti)symmetric wavefunctions as you wrote them and form psi(x), we need to use both odd and even components. I...

Proving That Even Potential Leads to Even or Odd Wavefunction

I convinced myself of that using the mathematics. Continuing the same problem, suppose I show that any function ψ can be written as a linear combination of both odd and even solutions. How does that lead to the ability to assume ψ to be odd or even? After all, if a function is a linear...

Proving That Even Potential Leads to Even or Odd Wavefunction

Homework Statement This problem comes from the Griffiths QM book and is stated as "show that if V(x) is an even function then the solution to the time-independent Schroedinger equation can be taken to be either even or odd." Now, I have seen the solution to this, but am not thoroughly...

Best Written High School Physics Text Books (SAT)

I am currently using the "Introduction to Solid State Physics" by Kittel for an independent study in the course and my preparation for final tomorrow. I find this book to be an absolutely incomprehensible garbage. There is very little organization, let alone any kind of logical flow. It is more...

Harmonic vs Anharmonic Interactions in Lattice

I am currently working my way through Kitel's Solid State Physics book. When discussing the consequences of the harmonic assumption (quadratic degree of freedom for interatomic lattice interactions), he states that 1) the lattice waves do not interact 2) a single wave does not change form...

Successful Fakes in Academia: How Should I React?

Very nicely said. Have you read any of Brian Tracy's books? :approve: I have had similar experiences to those of the OP. There are students in my undergrad who do something along the lines described above. They play it very safe with course selection (avoiding "tough-grading" professors...
