    Ultimately they take what they want, but they are not going to get hired after graduate school to be a string theorist or work on topological solids.

    Thanks for the like, as I age, I find that these "kids" keep asking more and more un-informed questions about coursework and it's relevance to their education.

    Yeah I'm entering applied solid state physics and find the forum threads of the form "Should I take differential geometry/abstract algebra/topological basket weaving?" to be incredibly irritating.

    It's sad to me that physics culture has been taken over by those who conflate mathematics with reality, although I'm open minded enough to suppose that they could be right in the long run.
