Contest Rules:

1. Any digital photo or digitally-scanned photo relevant to the theme will be accepted within the contest period. In case there's a gray area, or you're not sure if the picture is suitable, check with me first.

2. Please resize your digital photo to no more than 650 x 490 or 490 x 650 pixels. You may also crop your picture if you wish. You are also allowed to adjust the brightness and contrast of your picture but these should not dramatically alter the look of the picture. But other than those, any form of picture editing or modification is not allowed. This is a photo contest, not a picture editing/special effect contest. You may add a watermark or your name/nickname to the photo for identification purposes.

3. Upload your photos to any of the photo servers such as imageshack or photobucket. Then post it the relevant contest thread and link your picture using the img command. PM me if you do not know how.

4. Only ONE picture per member per contest. Once a picture is posted, it cannot be changed other than a total withdrawl by that member from that week's photo contest. Exceptions will be made for modification to comply with the rules, such as resizing.

5. At the end of the contest period, I will open a poll and every PF member can vote for the picture they like best.

6. Note that in case we have a large number of entries, I will do the polling in more than one thread. If that's the case, you can vote in each of the polling threads. The photos will be assigned in the polling threads in the order they were submitted.

7. These pictures must be something that you took, not something taken off someone else's photo albums or taken by someone else. I have no way of checking if you did this, so we'll go by the honor system.

8. You can use a picture only once. Once it is used in a contest, it cannot be reused in another contest.

9. Please post only pictures meant for submission in this thread

Okay, I was going to put up a very bad, amateurish picture from the pumpkin fest I attended last weekend, because there were lots of people there to witness the exploding. What was the heaviest pumpkin where you were, hypatia?

And, nice shot, by the way. The arrangement and colour is perfect.

As I recall, the big boy was over 500 pounds. I believe it was the one they have their back to. Now Georgina, please explain what "to witness the exploding" means. Do they blow up the Pumpkins?

I didn't specify people, and one of the definitions is "A large number of things positioned or considered together" (answers.com) so I'd say it's fair game. I guess the voters can decide whether they think a picture fits.

That was my first idea too, however, Marzena was not so sure what the word means and she checked in the dictionary. It turned out that it doesn't have to be people. That helped a lot, browsing our pictures we have found we are not both fond of people

Okay, first please note that it's pretty rural out here. The prize winning pumpkin at the pumpkin festival I was at weighed just under 1,200 lbs. They then take the three largest pumpkins out into a field, haul them up about 200 feet by a huge crane and drop them on a an already pathetic looking car. You should see the explosion on impact, even just with the ground. As a friend of mine said, "Whoa. Pumpkin shrapnel everywhere."

No, matthyaouw, it's not a waste, really, because a pumpkin that grows to that size is so fibrous, the meat can't be used for anything. It's simply huge. It's not edible. And the car they drop it on is something that's dump-bound anyway that they paint and gussy up for the occasion. As one friend of mine put it, "It's like watching the stuff they blow up on "Mythbusters" just to see what will happen."

After the pumpkin explosions, both children and grown-ups run into the field to gather seeds from the giant pumpkin to grow some next year themselves.

Truly, it's not as sad as all of that. If a bunch of grandmas could get together and bake 2,000 pumpkin pies from the thing, they would.

So here's the crane

Here are the three pumpkins. Middle one is the 1,200 pound one flanked by about a 500 and 300.

And here's the hapless car that I double even had a motor in it prior to a pumpkin actually landing on it. (They missed their mark twice.)

I'd show crowd pictures, but I think I've carried on long enough about this and I should leave this thread along now.
