Straight and Narrow

Our theme this week is on anything that is "straight and narrow" (I'm sure you can guess what would not be allowed on PF, so don't even try).

Contest Rules:

1. Any digital photo or digitally-scanned photo relevant to the theme will be accepted within the contest period. In case there's a grey area, or you're not sure if the picture is suitable, check with me first.

2. Please resize your digital photo to no more than 650 x 490 or 490 x 650 pixels. You may also crop your picture if you wish. But other than that, any form of picture editing or modification is not allowed. This is a photo contest, not a picture editing/special effect contest. You may add a watermark or your name/nickname to the photo for identification purposes.

3. Upload your photos to any of the photo servers such as imageshack. Then post it the relevant contest thread and link your picture using the img command. PM me if you do not know how.

4. Only ONE picture per member per contest.

5. At the end of the contest period, I will open a poll and every PF member can vote for the picture they like best.

6. Note that in case we have a large number of entries, I will do the polling in more than one thread. If that's the case, you can vote in each of the polling threads. The photos will be assigned in the the polling threads in the order they were submitted.

7. These pictures must be something that you took, not something taken off someone else's photo albums or taken by someone else. I have no way of checking if you did this, so we'll go by the honor system.

8. You can use a picture only once. Once it is used in a contest, it cannot be reused in another contest.

9. Please post only pictures meant for submission in this thread.

Wow, those are some sad and lonely looking picnic shelters!

Probably designed by someone who was into minimalism.

I have other straight and narrow stuff, but this has to get in! It is the New Portland Wire Bridge, completed at the end of the Civil War. It is a Civil Engineering historical landmark. It's straight and it is really narrow. It was designed for a time when there wasn't a lot of traffic, and people would patiently wait for a farm wagon or a woodcutter's wagon to cross, before crossing in the opposite direction. Crossing this bridge on a motorcycle is a real trip, and when out-of-state biker friends come to Maine, I like to take them here. The bridge bounces and sways, and the deck floats freely, so that it swings a few inches from end-to-end if you accelerate or apply the brakes.

I can say for sure, it is one of the most lonely-est spots on earth. Even the wind refuses to howl there.

Damn you all and your perfect pictures! How am I supposed to confidently vote?

I just noticed Nicky Hayden in the background of that bike pic. I don't know if I can vote for that one now being a die hard Rossi fan.

Interesting thing about guitars is their frets all appear evenly spaced when seen from the bridge. The foreshortening in the distance is precisely offset by the increased spaces between them.

Any physics major worth salt can figure the math behind that phenomenon even at a very early age.

You need to resize that, BTW: it's 600 x 801.

I am going to submit this one instead of my last one:

OK, I'm going to allow this up to this point. I'm going to add to our contest rules that once you submit a picture, it can no longer be changed other than a withdrawal from that contest.

I had posted this in the disqualified thread, but since it is all that I have right now, why not?

This reminds me... did I hear the the commentary correctly during the BCS championship game, when the band did a double "script Ohio," that one of the sousaphone players who dotted the "i"s is a physics major?

hmm.. i hadnt heard that actually. that's kinda cool if its true.

i know a surprising number of the folks in the band are not musical-type majors and are engineers and scientists instead.
