For any hockey fans out there (usually Canadians, Europeans, northern Yankees, and the children of Gary Bettman's machinations--represent!), the NHL post-season is upon us and the two-month(ish) quest for Lord Stanley's Mug has begun!

8 teams from each of the two conferences (West and East, each comprised of 15 teams) have made their way in, and will battle (bludgeon?) each other through 3 rounds of playoffs in a best of 7 format (click on the Road to the Cup tab on the left side of the page to bring up the EA NHL Hockey-esque tracker):

Since my team is out of the playoffs (really, really out of the playoffs, and drafting first overall in June...) I've jumped on the Montreal Canadiens bandwagon (it'll take until the Conference Finals for me to start cheering for Vancouver). Being a fan of the underdog, I'd love to see the Phoenix Coyotes win it all, but the pragmatist in me thinks that it'll be Philadelphia or Detroit--maybe against each other!

Anybody else following along? Probably too late to start up a PF playoff pool, but oh well...

I can't really justify spending 6-12 hours a day watching hockey (especially with a thesis to finish...), but CBC is offering video-streaming for those in Canada, and I believe that NHL.com is at least offering live audio!

too bad my avs are so far from doing ANYTHING. still, playoff hockey is the most entertaining sport.
 
I expected more fight out of the Coyotes, but the Wings could very well sweep tomorrow!

I agree, once you're in the post-season, it's a whole 'nother game. The intensity, the grind, the Cinderellas, and the double / triple overtimes with everything on the line--that's playoff hockey!

it sucks but at least you guys got in. plus the wings probably won't get past the next round. hopefully, anyway. lol

Since members of the winning team each get a day to spend with the cup, it's been through some adventures:

The closest it's come to that is probably when Mark Messier got the cup dented while at the strippers, and took it to a local autobody place to get fixed.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread--congrats to the Boston Bruins and Tim Thomas for winning the Stanley Cup! While I was hoping that the Canadian city could act as Stanley's host, the better team in the series definitely won (and the Canucks barely put up a fight)

...Unfortunately, some hooligans decided to stir up trouble (the unconfirmed story is that a gent brought his beater truck downtown so that he could tip it over and burn it in the event of a Vancouver loss, which actually happened and ended up figuratively and literally fanning the flames) and Vancouverites (and actual Canucks fans) are left to clean up the mess:

I think the various levels of government were hoping for a repeat of the Olympics where everybody mostly just had a good time and dispersed happily after the Canadian hockey win, but that rapidly fell apart and turned into a repeat of the 1994 game 7 loss to the New York Rangers:
