SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on simplifying the absolute value expression |b + 2| as b approaches -2 from the left. The user initially questions whether |b + 2| can be simplified to -b - 2, recognizing that approaching -2 results in a negative value. Ultimately, the user concludes that the solution is simpler than anticipated, indicating a realization about the behavior of absolute values near critical points.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of absolute value functions
  • Knowledge of limits in calculus
  • Familiarity with one-sided limits
  • Basic algebraic manipulation skills
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the properties of absolute value functions
  • Learn about one-sided limits in calculus
  • Explore techniques for simplifying expressions involving limits
  • Practice problems involving limits approaching critical points
USEFUL FOR

Students studying calculus, particularly those focusing on limits and absolute value functions, as well as educators looking for examples to illustrate these concepts.

Homework Statement

| b + 2 |
----------
b + 2

Lim b ---> - 2 - ( from the left )

The Attempt at a Solution

Am I right if I say the absolute value can be simplified into

-b - 2 because the way we are appraching 2 would give me a negative number so I would have to make it like this ?
