SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the comparison of two prominent acoustics handbooks: "Handbook of Acoustics" by Malcolm J. Crocker and "Master Handbook of Acoustics" by Everest & Pohlmann. Participants highlight that while both are highly regarded, "Principles of Underwater Sound" by Urick is considered essential for sonar professionals. Additionally, "Computational Ocean Acoustics" by Jensen et al. is noted for its quality, although the focus appears to be on air acoustics. The conversation also touches on the impact of acoustical environments on historical battles.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of acoustical principles and terminology
  • Familiarity with sonar technology and its applications
  • Knowledge of air and underwater acoustics
  • Awareness of historical contexts related to acoustics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "Principles of Underwater Sound" by Urick for sonar applications
  • Explore "Computational Ocean Acoustics" by Jensen et al. for advanced acoustics techniques
  • Investigate the effects of acoustical environments on military strategies
  • Compare methodologies in "Handbook of Acoustics" by Malcolm J. Crocker and "Master Handbook of Acoustics" by Everest & Pohlmann
USEFUL FOR

Acoustics researchers, audio engineers, military historians, and professionals involved in sonar technology will benefit from this discussion.

Hello!
I am looking for a good handbook in the acoustics field. I read that handbook of acoustics by Malcolm J. Crocker is one of the best, second one that came up in my research is master handbook of acoustics by Everest & Pohlmann. Can anyone recommend one over the other, or maybe knows something better than either of those two?

Principles of Underwater Sound by Urick is considered a bible by sonar folks.

Also Computational Ocean Acoustics by Jensen etal... is pretty good too.

However, I imagine you're looking more for air acoustics.

One last interesting tidbit, is that there's a contention that some battles have been lost due to unusual acoustical environments. Here's one writeup on it:
