Wrt, empirically analyzing data, you can take a look at Eureqa from Cornell? It has spawned many siblings using AI to analyze results and recover the hidden equations that may be lurking in the noisy mix of data.

I have recently searched for instances in physics that were suited to be an example of independent research. I couldn't find any. My results are written here:
